Calling all the college students! This one is for you. Citi is doubling the rewards on their student cards just in time for those of you headed back to school. In addition to the double rewards, they’re also giving out bonus points for things like paying on time, having a good GPA, and enrolling in paperless statements.
It’s a great offer for the college students who do well at managing their money and want to be rewarded. It’s our free money feature offer this week.
How to Get Your Double Rewards
- Open a new college Citi mtvUTM or Citi Forward card by September 30, 2009.
- Use your card at bookstores, record stores, restaurants (including fast food), movie theaters, and video stores.
- Get 10 points per dollar for the first 3 months.
- Redeem your points for various rewards including gift certificates, cash back, merchandise and travel.

I admit that this makes a very tempting offer for a college student to get a credit card! You say that “It’s a great offer for the college students who do well at managing their money and want to be rewarded.” I think it’s worth mentioning that many if not most college students have never had a credit card, don’t know if they will do well at managing their money, and will be exposed to a LOT of temptation to buy things while away from the influences of home and family. Most also have limited means to make payments as well.
It’s just another way for the credit card companies to hook in another life-long customer and debtor. There is no free money, and the cost for THIS money could eventually be pretty high.
College is for learning, getting ready for the next phase of life. Many kids come out with a lot of student debt – why encourage them to add credit card debt as well? It’s a burden that their future would be brighter without.
