How to Get Your Sign Up Bonus
- Open a new USAA checking account by May 31, 2009 with a minimum deposit of $25.
- Set up and maintain direct deposit.
- Bonus will be added to your account in December 2009.
USAA Bank Details
USAA Membership. USAA membership is open to the military, former military, their families, and children whose parents had USAA insurance at one time. Membership is also open to residents of Bexar County, Texas.
Previous USAA Customers. You used to be able to open a checking account without military ties. On June 30, 2006 they closed the doors to the general public. However, if you opened an account before then, like we did, you can still use their bank products. Even though we don’t qualify for insurance, I might still give it a try, just to see if it goes through.
Free checking. The free checking account is called the four star checking account. It has no monthly service fees.

- Offer is not available if you already have a USAA checking account.
- Offer excludes Teen Checking accounts.

Oh, darn! I already have a USAA checking acct, so I am not elligible. But, I have to say, if anyone is considering signing up, I highly recommend them. Their customer service is top notch and they have a great feature called “Deposit at Home” where you can deposit your checks with your scanner. So convenient. It’s the little ways they “go the extra inch”, as Linda Kaplan Thaler would say in her book The Power of Small, that really differentiates them from the rest of the pack. I use them for pretty much everything!
I took advantage of this offer this week (dad was retired military; mom still has auto through them) and am really happy to be back in the USAA family with them giving me a Christmas present in December. I was in the market right now for an on-line only account, so this is good timing. I plan to save $25 per paycheck via direct deposit through the end of the year=$375, for a ROR of 26.7%!
