The Great Credit Card Debate Off to an Early Start!

Posted by Madison on January 3, 2008

We only have one more day until the big credit card debate…. however, Ana at Debt Free Revolution tried to slip in an early post: Dirty Credit Card Company Tricks. It seems she’s trying to convince Lynnae at Being Frugal to get rid of credit cards after being hit with a fee.

Since I busted Ana, I thought I’d leave some credit card goodwill to get things started on this side!

My husband carries a wallet that is over 14 years old. It looks terrible and is falling apart. However, he’s in love with it and won’t get rid of it… he even got a new one for Christmas but has no intention of using it. One of these days the wallet is going to break completely in half and he’s going to find that he has lost all the contents of his wallet.

Reason #1 to Love Credit Cards

If you lose cash, you are out the money. If you lose a credit card you can call and get a replacement card with a new number. In addition, they can close your account and you will not be responsible for the charges. Carrying cash: out of luck! This gives me some peace of mind in case I ever lose my purse or my husband’s wallet finally falls apart.

Check out 25 more reasons to love credit cards in the official credit card debate! The war is on Ana!

  1. Glad I could kick things off for you. 🙂 At this point, you’re going to have a hard time convincing me that credit cards are good. But I’m interested in what you have to say. Can’t wait for the debate tomorrow! 🙂

  2. Now Madison, you have to admit, that really was just too much TEMPTATION for me to resist, even for another day!

As for your husband’s wallet: at least it’s the wallet and not a pair of underwear he won’t give up! LOL I carry my CASH in my pocket, not in my wallet (and often don’t carry a purse). My husband’s wallet is pretty natty also, but since I have the budget numbers in my head he usually lets me pay for things above the $20 bill I hand him once a week. It works for us.

  3. ew don’t be telling me about your husband’s underwear lol.

    hee hee

I am so ambivalent about credit cards it isn’t funny. I do have a post going live tomorrow morning about the role of credit cards in my life as a possible backup plan, so that puts me closer to Madison than Ana although my heart wants to go Ana. Hopefully I’ll carve out time to write my “Why I Carry My Cards In My Wallet” post tonight. dang car dying is messing with my entire schedule. Heh.

  4. That’s all true, but don’t you get the same protection with a Visa debit card?

  5. Madison / Ana,

May the both of you shower us with all the pros and cons of credit cards.

I am sure, no one will be looking for a winner. Everyone of us will be just looking for some fun and lots and lots to learn.

    Let’s all have some fun.

  6. @ Eden: I believe the maximum is $500 for a debit card if you don’t report it within 2 days.

  7. I would say that credit cards aren’t bad, but you can choose to use them badly or well.
