Goodbye Microsoft Money, Hello Quicken

Posted by Madison on May 13, 2010

Since Microsoft Money discontinued their product, I’m in the process of a huge conversion of our personal finance software.

After reviewing most of the money management software available, I decided to go with the market leader, Quicken.

A large part of the decision was based on the converter that Quicken is perfecting for Microsoft Money users to easily convert Microsoft money to Quicken with huge files. Ours dates back to 1996 and had over 200 accounts.

Microsoft Money Software Discontinued

If your copy of MS Money is now expired, you don’t have to quit using it. However, these online services will no longer work:

  • Online Quotes
  • Direct Online Banking
  • Bill Pay

The final expiration for all copies of Microsoft Money is January 2011. If your copy already expired, you might be able to purchase another copy of the Microsoft Money software on ebay but it will only work until the end date in January 2011.

Quicken Promo Codes

If you’re planning to buy a copy of Quicken to make your Microsoft Money to Quicken conversion, you’ll want to take advantage of the Quicken coupon codes for $20 – $50 off until July 31, 2010:

Our Quicken Conversion

We converted to the Quicken Home and Business version since we had the MS Money home and business version. You need to convert to the equivalent product for the conversion to go smoothly.

I’m not going to say our conversion went flawlessly, as there is a problem with the conversion of savings bonds, but otherwise the converter did pretty well. I’m still working on rebuilding my favorite reports and a few other things that I hope to have sorted out soon. Overall, I’d give the conversion an A-.

We are now running both Microsoft Money and Quicken until I feel comfortable with the new product.

Comments to Goodbye Microsoft Money, Hello Quicken

  1. I used to be a loyal Quicken customer. I bought every upgrade each year and was happy and in control.

Then Intuit announced that Quicken was to be no more in the UK and dropped it.

So I was forced to move to the only alternative out there. MS Money.

I made the move, converted all my accounts and now guess what. That’s gone the same way.

I have tried so many online services and other bits of software and none come close to what Money or Quicken can do so it would seem us Brits are going to have to revert back to a spreadsheet or plain old pen and paper.

  2. Madison – Do you feel that Quiken is worth the cost? I would like to get a program that helps track everything better so that my wife and I can have a better grasp on our budget. I currently track everything on a spreadsheet, but not to the transaction level, so I have been considering Quicken. I have accounts at anywhere between 10-20 places at a given time.

I started using Mint to see what all the fuss was about, but have found it too basic and I cannot get it customized to my liking. Plus, I do not feel like it is a “smart” program capable of learning that certain repeated transactions (e.g. grocery store, 401k contributions) should be coded in a certain way. They continually come in as “uncategorized” or “transfer” so I have to manually update quite a bit.

    • Absolutely Andy. Personal finance software is really one of the only software programs I’m willing to spend money on. Then again, I like to track everything. Each year, we review all of our transactions to tweak our budget for the upcoming year. It helps to have all of the data at our fingertips.

I too tried Mint.com, but found it way too basic. Maybe in a few years it will be robust enough to handle more complex transactions. Right now, I think it’s geared towards customers who just have a couple of accounts.

So for now, I’ll be spending my money on Quicken!

  3. Hello

Unfortunately Quicken still doesn’t support international quaotes… So if you have som shares outside US or Canada, there is no automatic update.. You have to manually enter every quote, every day, and always and always…
If someone has another program that can manage international quote, it would be great !
    Thank you !
