- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2016I usually face the prospect of a Quicken upgrade with fear and loathing. I have had some experiences where it has taken multiple revisions to work out bugs and other issues, so the prospect of this upgrade was not appealing. I usually wait to after tax season and then buy last year's upgrade for a 60% discount. By that time I am more confident that the usual bugs have been resolved even though it means I am on a two year renewal cycle.
This year I decided to upgrade to the most recent version for two reasons. I want the new owner to have a positive and profitable experience with Quicken because I, like so many here, have become dependent on Quicken. There really is no alternative for managing personal finances on a desk top. I hope that the new owner has a commitment to the product although the fact that they are a private venture firm causes some concern. I also saw the $44.95 Amazon price which puts the cost back into the realm that is affordable.
I HIGHLY recommend going to another review "1runr" entered on November 26, 2016 in the Premier edition reviews under 3 star section and follow his/her instructions. Previous upgrades have stumbled on password issues. I have found that over the years, removing the passwords before the upgrade, and then reinstalling them after the upgrade, has been necessary and contributes to a smoother experience.
I will add some additions and clarifications to his instructions. After the initial backup of your data and the completion of the file validation process with the necessary corrections, make a backup of the validated and corrected data file. I have been a Quicken user since about 1990 and my file size has over 200,000 items! After the first validation, I had to manually fix some 10-15 corrupted entries. Quicken fixed some other problems and reported the results to me. It took about 3 validations to have a perfectly clean file.
Quicken 2014, my previous version, did not allow me to enter a "blank" password for the Password Vault. Instead I reviewed the accounts to be sure I knew each of the account passwords for the "one step update" for each account. I then deleted all of the passwords by deleting the password vault. This DOES NOT delete the web linkage to the external accounts, it just deletes the passwords and they are easily reentered after the upgrade.
Instruction #6 may be confusing. For Quicken Deluxe, 2014, it should read "go to Edit/Preferences/Intuit ID... and make sure you can login – you will need the loginID and login password to upgrade to Q2017. Quicken calls this password your “Intuit/Quicken ID Password”." The Intuit ID works very well. I enabled 2 step authentication to the online account previously, so I know no one will get access to any of my data.
Interestingly, after the upgrade, I reran the validation test and about 30 previously unidentified corrupt or erroneous entries were reported. I will have to go back and check them, but they are from the early 2000's. Perhaps they are the result of earlier formatting that has subsequently been modified through serial upgrades. I hope they will be easily rectified but I skipped over them over for the time being to test the functionality of the new product.
Many of us are really very long time users of Quicken and we like the centrality and control over finances that Quicken, as a desktop application, offers. I hope the new owners appreciate how really loyal their customers are, and will be, even if the customer is displeased with the upgrade experience. Before the web connect functionality, the ability to organize and centralize banking activities, and print checks seemed miraculous. However most Quicken users now have graduated and value the portfolio update function, the automatic web connect download and the reconcile function. I have used some of the web enabled download and reconcile features for credit card accounts and a few bank accounts, but will, as of next year, implement this function on all bank accounts and brokerage accounts since it has worked so seamlessly and accurately for a number of years. Quicken allows for almost total automation of common financial activities. Only your idiosyncratic uses will require manual input. What a time saver both for regular oversight of your finances and year end tax reporting! Historically, I have not, and probably will not use the mobile component so I can't comment on it.
I was happy to see, after the upgrade, that all of the functionality that I was able to quickly test, was totally intact, including reports, quote update function, and the web connect and download features. I had to change the display to one line view and compact view to emulate the look and feel of the way I had Quicken 2014 set up, but that was a minor adjustment. On the plus side, the slightly smaller font allowed more columns to be displayed in the investing/portfolio window. I must admit I do not like the absence of color in the toolbar and the muted colors for the remainder of the graphs and displays will take some getting use to. I also noted that the display definitely was slow with poor refresh when the window resized. However, I usually fix the window size and do not need to adjust it, so I don't think this will have a significant impact on my use.
My guess is that some of the disgruntled users may have had some difficulty with the upgrade because they have corrupted files, or they have failed to remove the passwords to the program file and the Quicken vault. I remember problems with previous upgrading and discovered that the problem was caused by the failure to remove the passwords. However, following "1runr" from November 26, 2016's instructions worked seamlessly for me. And, it gives you a chance to clean up the corruption in your files you may not have even known existed, especially if you are a really long time user of Quicken and have gone through multiple upgrades.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2017Just like everybody else, I recently updated (or ransomed?) to QD2017 from my prior QD2014. The new owners of Quicken have their work cut out for them, reversing the trend of lack of investment in this 30+ year old software. From the articles written on the sale of Quicken to HIG Capital, it only contributed ~$50M to Intuit’s revenue of $4B so it was hard to justify investment. There’s only so much a checkbook needs to do after all. But still, they should have fixed things that were broken or unstable. We’ll see over time how the product evolves with the new ownership.
I’m surprising myself and am going to rate the QD2017 version a 4-star. I expected a repeat of the nightmares of my past Quicken updates where files no longer opened, worked, or missed data. It quickly converted my QD2014 files to QD2017 format. I had one 30 minute hiccup where it would not recognize the password to my files. I dreaded the implications, but I got onto the Quicken chat help and the representative quickly helped me. Though this should have been noted in an install guide note, you have to remove the password protection on your QD2014 files *before* converting them to QD2017. Since the QD2017 program uses improved encryption, it doesn’t know what to do with the file passwords from the QD2014 program. This required me to uninstall QD2017, reinstall QD2014, remove passwords from my files, then uninstall QD2014, and then reinstall QD2017. Once in my files in QD2017, I was able to recreate the file passwords. Ok, simple enough but it should have been noted since it’s a first order blocker.
I also just completed my monthly reconciling across bank, credit, and investment accounts. The one-step updates went smooth, no problems with the downloads and the files are all working.
Things they fixed:
I did notice they fixed one annoying bug from prior versions. When reconciling credit card or banks statements, you could not get the reconcile window to sort the line items by $ amount or payee. You could select the date column to make it sort them in order of date, but clicking on the payee or $ amount column would only result in some random order – this bug existed all the way back to my QD2007 days. In QD2017 they fixed this bug, making it much easier to track down any problems with your reconcile line items.
Things they still need to fix:
- On investment accounts, you still cannot select which columns to display in the register. It defaults to showing all of them. For savings, checking, and credit accounts, you have broad flexibility to select which columns to display but not so with investment accounts. You are able to adjust the width of the columns, but that too is buggy. Sometimes if you change the right side boundary of a column, it’s the adjacent column to the left that changes. Weird. Also you are absolutely not able to change the width of the “Description” column for investment registers. Why? So silly, no idea. So you have lots of wasted space that is needed for displaying information, while other columns get shrunk to the point of not being able to read them.
- I still wish they would create an “Undo” function once you make or delete an entry. Something equivalent to the Ctrl-Z function you have in most Windows programs. The Edit > Preferences shows there is a selection to enable this, but I’ve seriously never been able to make it work.
