The American Express Blue Cash Everyday card offers a $150 sign up bonus.

American Express Blue Cash Everyday

The card made the list of Most Popular Credit Card Bonuses Last Year. I was surprised it made the list since we never highlighted the bonus during the Free Money Friday series last year!

I promised I would revisit this card since there’s a reader preference for it.

The sign up bonus is our Free Money offer this week!

How to Get Your $150 Sign Up Bonus

  2. Spend $1000 within the first 3 months.

More on American Express

Cash Back. You’ll earn 3% cash back at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases), 2% cash back at US gas stations & select US department stores and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Redeeming Cash Back. You’ll earn your cash back as reward dollars, which you can redeem as statement credits.

Watch for Email Offers. While I’ve had the Blue Cash Everyday card, I’ve gotten various email offers to earn additional statement credits. I checked my old emails and found offers to add authorized users and offers to upgrade to the Blue Cash Preferred card.

Preferred Card Option with Higher Cash Back and Annual Fee

The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express with a $95 annual fee, earns 6% cash back at stand-alone supermarkets (up to $6,000 in spending), 3% cash back at stand-alone gas stations and department stores, and 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases. The sign up bonus for the preferred card is currently $200 after $1,000 in purchases.

If you do the math, you’ll pay $95 more for the Preferred card, but get $50 more in sign up bonus. You’ll need to make up for $45 in the increased cash back rate on groceries. The break-even point would be after spending $1500 in groceries. The preferred card is typically listed at the top of the list for grocery store cash back. We originally started with the Preferred card first, then downgraded it to the Everyday card to maximize our cash back at grocery stores during the first year.

Comments to American Express Blue Cash Everyday $150 Sign Up Bonus

  1. Simply looking at the groceries category rewards alone you will be $180 better off with the preferred card as opposed to the blue cash card. So even taking into account the $95 fee you are still $85 a year better off with the preferred card. And on top of that there is another 1% extra on all your gas purchases. So unless your groceries spend is very low it makes no sense to downgrade from the preferred card to get cash card.
