A couple of cities in the Seattle area have implemented plastic bag bans, so reusable bags are a necessity. I have a collection I've accumulated, but all are bulky and stiff and a pain to carry around. When I found this on Amazon, I decided to take a risk since I knew I could return them if they weren't any good. I'm pleased to report they are FANTASTIC bags. Not only are they compact and portable, but STRONG. Unfolded, they are about the size of a typical "small" reusable bag and you can carry about 20#'s of groceries in them. To provide some context around what they will hold, here's what I packed into one yesterday: 4 6-packs of applesauce (all brands come in the same size) 12 5.3oz containers of yogurt I had room to spare as well. I posted 3 photos to provide some comparisons to other bags. If they help, I appreciate you voting for them.
****UPDATE!**** It has now been almost 3 years since my review below, and about 3 years since I purchased these. All of the bags I purchased are still intact and working well. I haven't had to replace any of them. They have all been washed several times (always hung to dry) and they've been used several times a week. Many of them have been stuffed to the top with canned foods, making it heavy, and they are still holding strong. No holes no rips. The velcro is also still intact and they stay folded. Very good product and I definitely recommend!
Great bags! Very great size and VERY strong! I filled one of these to the tippy top with nothing but canned foods (just to give it a REAL test). There was no stretching, ripping, holes or any other issues with it. They hold up extremely well and they're well worth the price. I get questioned about them all the time when I go to the store. People want to know where I get them. Currently, the state of Washington is outlawing plastic bags in all stores, so people are forced to bring their own bags or pay 5 cents or more for a paper bag. So those who are trying to use their own bags are constantly dragging in an arm load of reusable bags that really cant fold up neatly like these do. When people see me pull these out of my purse, unroll them, and start packing my items they're amazed at how easy it looks and want to know where they can get them! Folding them is a snap, just follow the fold lines. Once they're folded they fit perfectly back in the little sack and are easy to throw in your purse or car. Another great thing about these bags is that they are washable (hang to dry though!) My mom just had me order her three packs of these because she loves mine so much. :)
I got these for my husband because most of the bags out here are girly and he didn't want to be seen carrying them out in public. It really is an easy fold bag. They are waaay bigger than expected, and that's a great thing! They seem to be very durable. Having them in the bag that comes with it is extremely useful. They are small, and I was worried that my husband would forget them and leave them in the house, forcing him to pay 10 cents per paper bag in ANY/ALL stores here because they made a plastic bag ban (which makes it extra fun to put your cart full of items loose in your cart and take them home that way because you forgot and are stubborn to pay the 10 cents like I am). The bag has a tie on it to keep the bags inside, and my husband uses that tie to hang it in the same places where he hangs his keys so he doesn't forget them when he leaves the house. Another reason why I'm happy I bought these bags was because ever since the plastic bag ban law was passed, the reusable bags being sold in the grocery stores got like 35% smaller for some reason.
The design of these bags is clever. They easily fold up into little squares, suitable for being carried in one's back pocket. Major props for the good design. They are made from a reasonably durable nylon fabric, no problem there.
Unfortunately, the manufacturing quality is extremely low. All the seems - and there are a lot of them - feel like they're about to come unsewn. The draw string on the little storage bag snapped after 2 weeks of use. One of my three bags is about to have its bottom seem come out, at which point it will become useless.
If these bags were cheaper, or if the quality were less s***ty, I would highly recommend them. But as is, they're not really a great value for the money.
I purchased these for my annual trip to EAA Airventure fly-in in Oshkosh, WI and they worked out great. This is a trip where I fly to an airport and camp on the field with the airplane. I don't have room for a lot of groceries in the plane and eating the vendor food gets really expensive. So, I have to walk a considerable distance and ride a bus to and from a grocery store. In the past, the long walk has caused the plastic bags from the store to fail before making it back to camp. I decided this year to bring shopping bags, but wanted some that were lightweight, strong, pack-able, and somewhat more "manly" looking. These were great because they pack down to about the size of a standard men's wallet (or smaller if needed!) and weight next to nothing. Also great is that they are so voluminous when unfolded that you can easily fill two of them with groceries for two people for a week. The price is good too. Finally, they look like something I might have been issued in the military. If you need pack-able shopping bags, don't hesitate. This is a good value!
Some have reported that he Velcro closure comes off after awhile. It does look like this could happen, but mine have not shown any signs of wear in this area, but even if it did, I wouldn't care because I jam them into the pockets of a small backpack. I don't see where you would really care if the Velcro was there or not. If it's really important to you, take a minute or two and sew it down with needle and thread.
These are really set up well. They are light weight but very sturdy (I load them up when I use them). They were a little tricky to learn how to fold and no instructions come with them. Since there's 3 in a pack I suggest taking one apart carefully to see how it was folded. But, I have to admit even that didn't help me at first. However, they scrunch up really well so you could just stuff them all back in the little sack without folding them which is what I did for a while. Then I tried again and found the trick is to lay the part of the bag that folds up and attaches to velco face down and fold the bag until it's the same width as that part and then fold the ends up until the velco appears and you can fold the top flap and attach it to the velcro. Folded or scrunched, either way, they fit back into the carry sack so you have 3 bags in one little sack. Oh, and they hold quite a bit of groceries. They're not really side on the bottom but because they are so flexible, it doesn't matter. They still hold a lot.
