High Performance From Low Tech
5 out of 5 stars
High Performance From Low Tech
I didn’t expect much from an exercise bike that wasn’t powered by electricity with a sales price of less than $200 (a lot less), but I have to say, this one surprised the heck out of me! It’s relatively easy to assemble if you take extra care when installing the pedals (don’t get stressed about it, just follow the directions and you’ll be fine), but it helps to use your own tools if you have them, and to read the assembly steps all the way through before you start. This is a folding bike, but it’s so well designed that you forget that rather quickly if you don’t use the folding feature regularly. It’s relatively light compared to other exercise bikes so it doesn’t take a lot of strength to move it around the room. When moving it you’ll appreciate that it includes a safety pin that prevents the bike from folding up if you don’t want it to. The tension dial is extremely low tech but it a actually does what it’s designed to do and the crank is so quiet that even my anxious rescue dog isn’t the least bit troubled when I exercise, and that’s saying something because this is a dog who gets freaked out at the slightest odd sound (the whoosh of a gas oven igniting, the tap tap of an exhaust fan flapper moving in a gentle breeze, etc…). I’m six feet tall and weigh almost 220 and it fits me perfectly. The seat is fine with me but might not be comfortable enough for some, but you can easily improve the padding by purchasing a padded cover, or by simply making your own by repurposing a stadium seat cushion or by cutting into an old foam pillow you don’t want anymore and reusing some of the foam padding to make a cushion by sewing it up inside part of an old pillow case. The only complaint I have is that the cell phone holder is so low on the cross bar that it’s unusable for me, and it lacks a water bottle holder. But both of those are minor.

A further update. Am now over four months and 40 miles short of 1000 miles on this exercise bike and find it has proved both durable and useful in getting an hour a day of exercise for my heart condition. It is extremely quiet and the magnetic resistance is so much better than the old system of a rubber roller on a bike tire type of bike. Most important to me is that in 4 months I have not missed a day using this bike and it lets me work out in front of the TV where I watch three lessons of Great Courses a day while getting my equivalent of 10,000 steps as is often recommended for those of us with heart conditions. In fact it has worked so well I have added a small book on its use in exercise programs to my website at www.amazon.com/author/scottro Other than the one early problem with the computer discussed below(which somehow ended up resolving itself so now I have a spare when needed) the bike has proved an excellent investment in my health. I do think that the pulse readings are a bit off and I keep an oximeter nearby when working out to verify my pulse readings trying to keep mine at 90% of maximum for my age (220 minus your age gives you theoretical maximum heart rate and normally recommend keeping aerobic exercise in 80-90% of that maximum range although that depends on your overall health). http://www.amazon.com/Contec-CMS50DL-Oximeter-Oximetry-Saturation/dp/B004BJT9OE/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417792738&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=osiometer

This is an addition to earlier review. Have now used the bike for over three weeks and putting 80 miles a week on it. Remain extremely pleased with the bike. Unfortunately at 240 miles the computer decided to have mind of its own and started rapidly scanning and resetting the time. Pressing and holding button for three seconds plus did not reset. Then it would not turn off so had to remove the batteries. Called customer service and they had me on file even though bought through Amazon so they had purchase date. Sending me a replacement set of handlebars which includes the computer and told me to keep the old one for spare parts. Very nice to work with. Could not find the model number but turned out the four digit code (1200) on front of the manual is the model number. Serial number is on the leg of the unit should you need that. Despite this problem this is working beautifully for me. Would be ashamed to tell you how much exercise equipment have bought over the years that never got used that much. I do a one hour a day workout on this bike, three 20 minute sessions with 10 minute break, and have not missed a day yet. Started out at resistance of 3 and up to 5 now. How this will hold up long term have yet to see but if have more to report will come back and edit this review.

Having read the reviews I agree that this is extremely well made and sturdy. Also smooth and quiet. Glad I did not go with cheaper and flimsy bike. While I have barely started using the machine I will return if in using it I find issues to note or helpful hints. In this review I am limiting my comments to assembly issues I ran into. It took me about half an hour to unpack and assemble. In unpacking you will want a box cutter or scissors to cut the various tapes and plastic. It comes very well protected. My first challenge was where the wheels went. I had to go back to the video to see they go to the front of the bike. Next they give instructions about how the peddles screw on and this you have to read very carefully. The left peddle screws in counterclockwise but the right peddle screws in clockwise. Doing otherwise can strip the threads. Their instructions on this are bit weak. The print on red warning on the wrapping is so small you need magnifying glass to read and in the manual they have bold print on the left peddle but not on the right peddle. The straps I found difficult to install. Finally found that on one side they pulled up over a flange. Before installing suggest you sit on bike and if possible have a partner adjust the straps to whatever footwear you plan to wear when peddling so you do not have to take off and reinstall the straps. If more than one person using this will need to adjust to the largest footwear. They were probably the hardest thing to install. As one who has had a lifetime of assembling Christmas toys for children and grandchildren I am used to instruction issues and a missing part or two. Alas this was true here although very minor. One of the small spring washers was missing --- and yes I did check the area carefully as well as the packaging. Minor item I will pick up at hardware store for a few pennies. The batteries are included but if you plan to use the bike frequently you will likely want to install alkaline or lithium batters as the heavy duty will not last long. Manual gives good instructions on how the computer works and I like the scan feature that lets you see all the functions one after the other. You can also set to just one if that is what you want. Can reset all to zero except the odometer which you can do but takes bit more effort. Manual does have some nice stretching warm up exercises included which are always a good idea before working out. Included is dual open end wrench, screwdriver and Allen wrench which is all you need to assemble. Did find when folding for storage needed to be sure holes aligned for the safety pin. Folding to the max pushed just beyond the hole. All of these are very minor items for what appears a high quality and extremely useful exercise bike. They include phone number, e mail and fax for any replacement parts you might need. No pricing but obviously can get that from them after the one year warranty period. One last item is that while not as bad as many items you will end up with all those little bits of styrofoam on the bike and elsewhere that are always a pain to clean up. So be prepared to vacuum and/or if you have a piece of packing tape handy that is good way to get these little devils. Any issues will come back and add. Hope you find this helpful.

Let's break down the grading here by sections. FYI, I have had the bike for about 3 months and have logged 850 miles. I am roughly 5' 11" and have weighed between 250lbs and 228lbs in those three months.

    1.) Assembly - 4.5/5
It took me (a non-handy desk worker with very little craftsman experience) roughly 25 minutes to put the bike together. A great deal of the assembly is done before you take it out of the box (the frame and handlebars are individually assembled). The one knock here is that the instructions could definitely be easier to follow, but it was still easier than following the instructions that come with a typical DIY desk or bookcase.

    2.) Operation - 4.75/5
For the price, of course. I have had the bike for roughly 3 months and have logged roughly 850 miles. I can't speak on it's longevity past 850, but it is still running like it was the day I put it together. Very little noise, smooth pedaling, stationary (doesn't wobble), and easy to bring out/put away. The only thing holding it back from a "5/5" is the seat. It isn't exactly "comfortable," but it isn't awful either.

    3.) Electronics - 3/5
It is pretty clear that the electronics were an afterthought for this product. This doesn't bother me, and it shouldn't bother you. You should *not* be using the HRM/Calorie counter on this bike. In fact, you probably shouldn't use a HRM/Calorie Counter on any exercise equipment that didn't cost you an arm and a leg. I generally use my own HRM (Polar), which often puts my actual calories at about 65-70% of what is listed. The mileage and speed seem to be fairly accurate. Overall, it's what you would (or should) expect from a relatively inexpensive piece of exercise equipment.

    4.) Price - 5/5
When I purchased this product, the price was actually around 120.00$. I think it costs a bit more now, but it is (probably) still a tremendous price for a reliable and consistent machine. I have yet to see any give in the machine, and I do not think it is unreasonable to expect that it might give me 2+ years of service. For a bike with easy assembly, good operation, and this price, it's easily worth a purchase.

Edit - (August 1st, 2013) - It has been around 2 weeks (and an additional 200 miles) since I posted this review, and I just want to re-affirm how great this bike is. I've seen some recent reviews that say it has problems when you crank up the intensity, but I have not experienced this. On the two highest settings (both of which I have used extensively the last month or so), I have yet to experience any "clicking" or "belt fraying." It does go from whisper-quiet to mouse-in-church quiet, but, honestly, you would have to be searching for a problem to even notice. This bike has played a large role in my (still ongoing) weight loss. I have recommended it to 4 people, and the 3 that ended up purchasing it are even happier than I am.
Edit - (October 21st, 2013) - Well, it has been about 2 and 1/2 months since my last edit, and I'm still thrilled with this bike. I have now put around 2400 miles on it, and it is still running as well as it did on day 1. It is worth noting that the bike does become a little bit noisier as you up the resistance and speed. At full resistance and high speeds, you get the occasional creak and groan, but nothing that bothers me, personally. As an aside, this bike has become my primary form of exercise after a leg injury has limited my ability to run consistently, and I give this bike non-marginal credit for my extensive weight loss (250 to 200lbs). It is, unequivocally, the best purchase I have ever made on amazon and one of the best purchases I have ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars rapport qualité prix excellent
Reviewed in France on March 22, 2021
A voir à l'usage.
En tout cas, je recommande vivement cet achat.

Lo que me parece destacable es que es cómoda, es silenciosa y ofrece bastantes niveles de resistencia. También es muy práctico que se pueda plegar para que ocupe menos espacio

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy set up, totally worth the money!
Reviewed in Canada on March 3, 2023
Just for background, my husband and I are both well over 200lbs and we feel sturdy on this. Tried to shake it while sitting on it and it is completely stable.

I will say installation of the bike was easy as well, I read about people getting confused but if you read and follow the manual properly it really is not difficult. I assembled it with no problems which is saying something because I once screwed up building a lack table from Ikea.

Usage wise I would say this bike is extremely worth the value. The tension on the bike is very accurate. When using the bike it is very quiet, no sound coming from it at all. Moving the equipment around is easy as well, the wheels are a bit stiff, but that's just because they were new/never used.

Three super tiny miniscule small things though:

    1. The phone/remote/etc. holder on the bike is quite low right where my thighs are, so when I use the bike it does scrape against it. If you don't like this then no problem at all, just don't install this part. Doesn't make a difference on how good the bike is.

    2. I am a little under 5'5" and I do feel myself having to extend my legs more when I ride the bike. Maybe I'm just not used to it 🤷‍♀️

    3. The odometer feature on the display does not reset. No matter how many times you push on the button and hold it, it will not reset and it states that in the manual. In order to do a hard reset on the ODO, you have to remove the batteries and put the back in.

All in all, solid 10/10 bike. Been looking for one that could hold over our weight just for peace of mind. Found this one and it does not disappoint. We got this during a discount so it was $198. Adding the price here to give future customers hope that the price does indeed go down!
