Had unique opportunity to run this side-by-side with a much larger unit Royal RL170MX 17-page shredder, shredding 8-banker boxes of receipts over 6 hours. This small Amazon unit still runs like a champ. It overheated 2 times, whereas the Royal overheated 6 times. Paper was fed in at the same rate on each machine, maybe 5 pages at a time max. The Amazon shred size is slightly bigger, and the motor slightly louder, but I still hold to the fact that this is the best shredder I've ever purchased/used for the price. Very happy with this purchase. Thanks Amazon!

This thing is a tank. Still consistently running strong with no problems! I'm happy every time I use it because I feel like I got a good deal for the $$$.

Over a year later, and this thing is still kicking butt. It hasn't overheated once! Still super-satisfied with this purchase.
14-Oct-2012 Update:
-------------------
Shredder still going strong! I just shredded a few months backlog of stuff all in one sitting with the motor just about running constant for maybe 20 min straight. I only had to unload the hopper 2x- it is deceivingly large in capacity. I was just waiting for the motor to kick out due to overheating, since I've been conditioned for so many years by my former shredder, but it just didn't happen. On the old shredder, this volume would have taken 1 hr to shred due to motor overheating and auto shutdown. Still happy as a clam with this purchase!
17-April-2012 Original Review:

Wow! After reading tons of reviews on Amazon, I was either going to go with a Fellows or this AmazonBasics. I decided to try this one because:
1. The competitive price for a mid-class 12-sheet vs. 11 sheet shredder. I figured more sheets=more powerful motor.
2. The highest rated Fellows in this mid-class category was rated so-so for CD's, vs. this one which reviewers rated well in this area.
3. I figured since this one had Amazon's name on it, I'd have a better chance of getting a higher-class machine than another brand selling on Amazon for a similar price.
All 3 points above amount to one thing: Hardcore motor for hardcore shredding. I was tired of fooling around with small shredders where I'd wait for motor cooling longer than shredding (not to mention multiple, messy basket emptying-s).
When I received the package today, I was initially disappointed wrt the size of the box. I expected it to be larger like the mid-class ones i've seen at the store. Boy was I was wrong! Clever packaging by Amazon revealed a very solid motor head securely packed within a nice sized basket (Nice work Amazon Packaging Engineers!).
I took it out, set it up, and plugged it in within 20 seconds. I was immediately very pleased with the obvious child/pet safety features. I then proceeded to shred a bunch of stuff (with the help of my 4-year old daughter) without any problems. The CD went through like butter, as did the paper. 12-sheets was slower as other reviewers indicated, but no strain on the motor... and relatively quiet too!
I am a very picky consumer (& professional software tester by trade), and I do not hesitate to return products that do not meet my expectations for design and durability. I would definitely buy this one again, and I will definitely recommend this one to my friends.
WOW! This shredder's a major league butt-kicker!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2012I bought this because I wanted a cheap paper shredder that I would not be too mournful of if/when I destroyed it. The reason that destruction is on the table is because I wanted to shred cardboard for use in a worm bin. To buy a cardboard shredder costs over a grand. To buy a high-end paper shredder, there are too many features, including ones that prevent it from accepting thick objects (such as cardboard), and it's still not intended for cardboard shredding.
So far, after roughly 8-10 baskets of cardboard boxes, packing paper strips, and newspapers, there has been no real problems with this shredder, though there are 2 things that I would like to point out.
The first is that even though the sound of the motor changes significantly when it takes a bite of cardboard, it does not slow down while cutting it. This means that it has a good amount of power. It has, however, slowed down a bit overall. I have corrected this by soaking a small amount of vegetable oil into a sheet of copier paper and shredding it.
The second thing to point out is that it has a feature where the feed slot will deactivate the shredder if said slot is gently forced open. This seems to be a feature to prevent fingers from getting shredded, but it often triggers while feeding cardboard due to the stiffness of the cardboard. You can hold the cardboard down to an angle that does not trigger this safety switch, but I would rather be trimming more pieces to paper width while it's working on the last one. I have trimmed the edge of this slot off so as to allow the cardboard to feed straight down into the shredder and thereby violated my warranty, and though it has corrected the problem of safety + 'just in case' for me with no noticeable loss of actual safety, I can't recommend doing it for obvious reasons.
Most negative reviews I read about shredder failures generally involve the negative interaction between heat and plastic. This shredder does contain plastic, but can generally do 2-3 typical boxes before any heat is detected. I do not wish to challenge the engineering of this device, and I have lots of time to shred when I see fit, so I let it cool whenever I detect any warmth at the top or bottom of the housing. The unit does also have a temperature cutoff feature. I have not triggered it.
The cutting blades in this thing are wicked and do very well. When the working part is lifted from the basket, a covered and protected switch turns the unit off so that it will not start if you were to lift it from the basket and reach into the wicked cutting blades to determine their level of wickedness. If you forget to empty the basket, the shreds will pile up until the pile eventually lifts the top off of the basket, triggering the switch and turning it off immediately.
I can easily say that this is a good shredder and that it will handle tough jobs, but only with a bit of reason thrown in. If you have a pile of papers or cardboard that has building up and expect to get it all done the day this arrives in the mail, please stop and think for a moment. I'm pretty sure that this is not intended to be used for marathon shredding sessions, and it does contain some plastic mixed in with its working parts. Shredding paper is not a light task (tape 50 pairs of scissors together and see how hard it is to cut a piece of paper) and nothing in this price range is going to last long if abused heavily.
Not much else to say really, other than it is not particularly quiet or fast. My worms are going berserk over the cardboard, versus leaves and grass though, and where I live, I would have to pay to have the cardboard removed to a recycler that would just sell it on, and I did not wish to burn it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Duradera y aguantadora
Excelente compra. Llevo ya un tiempo con ella y funciona como nueva. La trituradora aguanta bultos grandes de hojas, láminas de plástico... prácticamente de todo. Muy recomendada.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good medium duty shredder
I've only had this shredder for a day but I had a stock pile of nearly 400 sheets ready to shred which it made short work of. I was guestimating 10 pages at a time and never had any issues with jams or overheating. The bin fits regular size kitchen bags perfectly and the cross-cut feature makes me feel confident someone would have significant difficulty piecing anything back together.
The credit card shredder uses the main cutting blades and works well. The CD slot is separate and will only cut the disc into 4 strips (no cross cutting), I didn't get a chance to test this feature.
PROS
+ Perfect size and strength for daily home office use
+ Cross-cutting shreds the paper into 2"ish strips
+ Fits kitchen size garbage bags
+ Credit card and CD features
CONS
- Feeding the paper through the plastic guard was kind of awkward sometimes. Some times if you fed it too close to one side it would get sucked in at an angle and get scrunched up but never jammed.
CONCLUSION
For my needs (light to medium home office) I could have probably got away with the 6 sheet unit but I wanted the cross-cutting feature. As long as it keeps performing I'll be happy with the purchase. If you're going to be standing in front of a shredder for hours at a time, something with a better feeder mechanism will be worth while.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quiet, yet brittle. Not a product for angry people
I've had this for a month after breaking my old paper shredder by stuffing too many sheets of paper in it at one time.
Take note: being impatient will always cost you in one way or another, so Zen out a little more and your chance of having to dip into the cash reserves to fix things will be lessened. Being Zen may also increase your life expectancy so you'll be needing all that extra cash to pay for your expenses during your longer than expected life expectancy.
This shredder certainly is quieter than my old one, and can handle the number of sheets it says it can. I'd like it more if it mulched up the paper a bit more (like my old one). The shredded sheets don't look that shredded to me but maybe I'm just nit picking too much. Either that or I'm letting my paranoia getting the better of me. I guess I'd better cut down on those conspiracy movies for a while.
This is actually my second of this particular product, since the first one I got was damaged upon arrival. The lip of the basket was snapped off in one spot, meaning the whole basket is made out of rather brittle plastic. So don't kick the bucket in a fit of anger (refer back to paragraph 2) or run your chair into it too hard or you risk either cracking or putting a hole is the in the basket, rendering this product into something you'll have to jerry-rig to work for you on another waste paper basket.
That's never really a good idea. One either has to spend extra time cleaning up all the paper bits that fly about outside of the basket, or you spend an inordinate amount of time in Emergency getting your fingers stitched back on again... further frustrating any other activity that involves the use of fingers. Which - if you haven't really thought about it - is a rather long list of things.
This is the part where I heap an inordinate amount of praise upon Amazon for making the return of their damaged product an incredibly painless and easy affair. I'll also be going on and on about their stellar customer service and the rapid replacement of the damaged product in the hopes they read my review and become so misty eyed they send me a special thank-you in the form of a $100 coupon off my next purchase from Amazon (wink, wink).
So to conclude the mechanical part of the shredder is well made (though a bit heavy) and functions quite well, while the waste basket it sits on is of low quality and will more than likely be the first thing to bust if you're not careful This will cause most people to be forced to buy a whole new unit sooner than you really want to. And for most of you whose inside voice asked that question the answer is "Yes, it was made in China".
Happy shredding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations - Really Impressed with AmazonBasics
This shredder definitely exceeded my expectations. This is my third home shredder. I had gotten used to shredding 3 or 4 pages at a time, very slowly, and stopping every 20 minutes or so while the shredder cooled down (which usually took the better part of an hour). This shredder ripped through pages, barely slowing down even when fed the full 12 pages. After filling two large garbage bags of shredded material, the shredder finally wanted a break to cool down. It took about 20 minutes, rather than the 30 stated in the description. Then it ripped its way through more paper, filling another large garbage bag. Not only does the unit work well, it looks good, too. My only "complaint" - the bin is too small and needs to be emptied too frequently. A bin twice the height would be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Shredder for the price!
Overall I am very happy with this shredder, and for the price you can't go wrong.
1. Overheat protection - it will notify you via an LED light when the shredder has overheated giving you an indication to take a break and let the thing cool down. When the light goes off, you're ready to go again.
2. The waste basket has a window which allows you to see if its getting full. This is a useful feature as filling the basket too much will cause paper to get "stuck" in the teeth when you empty the basket, causing you to have to pull the paper out. As long as the paper stays in the range of the window, this rarely occurs.
3. On some shredders, the paper sensor is usually in the middle forcing you to insert smaller paper (like receipts) in the middle of the unit. This sensor seems to do a better job at allowing you to insert small pieces anywhere it lands and it will taken them.
4. The auto feeder seems to have a delay on turning off after eating through paper. At first I thought this was strange, but I'm guessing it does this to ensure it cleans the teeth of any paper left behind.
5. The black flap on top opens slightly on an angle to allow you to feed sheets through it. This works great to avoid getting your fingers caught (not sure how people do, but I'm sure it happens), and not to overload the system.
6. The more sheets you put at a time, the slower the shredding, but it does get through it.
