Helps Your Dog’s Digestion and Mental Health

Veterinarians recommend slow feeders to aid digestion and reduce bloating, and dogs love the challenge. Fewer treats will dispense when you set the difficulty level harder, making your pup work harder for their food.

The OurPets IQ Treat Ball is a fun rendition of a slow feed bowl that promotes a healthy lifestyle for your pet. You can put a portion of your dog’s meal in the ball, only allowing them to eat what is dispensed when the ball is rolled. Customers say

Customers find the treat ball entertaining, keeping dogs happy and occupied for up to 30 minutes, and appreciate that it works better than ridged food bowls. Moreover, the toy is easy to assemble with varying difficulty levels, and customers consider it worth the money. However, the durability and size receive mixed feedback - while some find it durable, others report the clear part breaking, and while the adjustable hole fits large kibble, some find it too big for their dogs. Additionally, the plastic material receives criticism for being hard rather than rubber, and customers mention the toy is noisy.

Both my dogs LOVE this ball
I purchased this in 2015 (it is now 2019) (see photo for my order date) it has lasted so long, and my dogs still love it! I bought it for my pug when she was a puppy, and she has yet to get bored of it. This ball lasted longer than her Kong did, and she was fed from both of them. How we use it: I use it to feed my Golden Retriever puppy all of his meals in (he gets fed 4x a day currently. We use half of his kibble to train with, and once we run out of it, he gets the other half in this ball) I make sure to keep them in a fenced area (in the pic my puppy is in the fenced are)...otherwise the ball will end up all over the place (including behind the toilet...eww. ) Once the dogs are done with it, I take it away, and soak it in detergent and water until an hour before the next mealtime. With my Pug, she loves this ball. I will give her a little of the puppy’s kibble in it because she is a raw fed dog, it doesn’t work with her food. I have put small pieces of carrot in it, but I really prefer to have dry foods in it because it can get icky if not. For those that are worried about their dogs getting their jaws stuck in it, you need to supervise your dogs with any toy. This is no different. As soon as my puppy starts mouthing it I correct them and encourage them to play with their paws. It worked with my small dog, and it’s working with my large dog. If they’re not taught appropriate play with this (or any other toy), accidents are more likely to happen. This is not a “I get to leave my dog alone and I get to do something else while they play with it and not supervise them” kind of toy. If you need to leave them alone while you do something that you can’t supervise them, consider crating them for that time instead. The ball has only separated twice while the dogs play with it. Usually it is just because I didn’t screw it on tightly enough. I got them to play with this by shaking treats out into the clear portion with them seeing. I then put the hole to their nose so they can sniff it. Then I put the toy down with the hole facing downward, and some food sitting on the ground (but still in the hole). Once they tap it and move the ball, I use my marker work (or use the clicker if clicker training). When they play nicely I will mark it with the marker word, and let them play for a bit. If they get mouthy with it, I tell them “no”, and once they play with their paws again, I use the marker word. If they don’t let up on it and are still mouthy, I will take it away for a few minutes. After two sessions with the ball, my puppies have learned to not get mouthy with it, and to only use their paws instead.

Our ball is now on its second life. We bought it originally for our Rat Terrier and really liked it. He has since passed away and we now gave a highly food motivated Chihuahua mix. She goes crazy for the toy. Every morning my husband goes through a daily ritual with her and the toy. It's the best toy!!

    PROS:
Durable - This thing is made of hard plastic. It can withstand some good punishment. If your dog isn't a chewer, like mine, this will last a lifetime. Even if they are a chewer, it'll take a more powerful breed to really destroy it. If you're dog is a heavy chewer, this toy (like all toys) should be used under supervision. Otherwise, this is perfect for medium and smaller dogs without question.

Adjustable Difficulty - This is very nice feature. Such a simple configuration allows you to challenge your dog to cater to their interest level. On the lowest difficulty setting, it can easily take a dog 10-15 minutes to empty. The difficulty setting begins at approximately 1.25 inches vertical and .5 inches horizontal for the 5 inch version. The vertical is adjustable.

Just a tip: Measure your kibble to see if it is compatible. Treats are easy to halve to adjust to the diameters but if you're using this as a feeding tool for fast eaters, finding out that your kibble will not dispense can be a downer.

Cleanable - This easily comes a part for fast and easy cleaning. This gives you options. Just as an example, My dog loves peanut butter. So, I place a little bit of it on the inside to further engage his nose and interest in his kibble. Easy to clean afterwards and makes his meal even more desirable.

Multiple Uses - Food dispenser (providing the kibble meets the specs I mentioned prior) or treat dispenser. That's a nice option to have. The 5 Inch version will hold slightly more than a half a cup of kibble per use. So, for the most part, you can feed your dog their meals using this toy.

    CONS:

Smaller breed (Non toy) have a decision to make -

Normally, the 5 inches would be for medium to larger dogs and the 3.5 would be for the smaller 15 lbs and under range.

The former is true but for dog owners of the latter, you have a decision to make.

The 3.5 variety is more play friendly for smaller breeds. They can engage themselves a bit more into the activity when they can throw the ball around themselves or you can engage with them in fetch. The problem is, that the smaller variety is more vulnerable to getting trapped under couches, entertainment centers, or anything that is a small height off the ground. You also have to fill the 3.5 variety more often. I personally use this toy as a distraction for separation anxiety and mild energy drain, so I opted for the 5 inch variety for my Jack Russell. It's less likely to get stuck under furniture (which I found to be important if you plan to use this toy without supervision) and allows me to fill it with half meals and the expense of it being only capable as a push toy for him.

Noisy - This certainly can be a noisy toy. Think of a slightly quieter child's push toy with the balls that rattle as they move it. That's describes it well enough, I think. Personally, it's not an issue as I find it ignorable. However, to those with hard wood floors and tiles, it can be a minor adjustment to tune out. Also, your dog may have a small learning curve if they're uneasy with a rattle noise. It shouldn't be too much to overcome once they realize the rattle noise equates to treats and fun. It's just something to point out.

Maneuverability for small breeds - This is strictly a push toy for smaller dogs if you choose the 5 inch. I wish it came with a means of attaching a rope for further engagement. Just a minor quip.

Overall, this is an excellent product of simple design.

This is a toy I'd recommend as a tool for fast eaters, separation anxiety, mild energy drain, or just play time. Definitely, one of the best food dispensing balls on the market right now.

    Cheers.

Size: 4 INCHPattern Name: IQ TREAT BALL 4"Verified Purchase
I've purchased five different food dispensing toys. The 5-inch IQ Treat Ball, the Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball, Large, the StarMark Interactive toy, and the Premier Pet Busy Buddy Twist N Treat Dog Toy, Medium, and the Premier Pet Busy Buddy Twist N Treat Dog Toy, Large.

Please note that you cannot clean the insides of the StarMark or the Omega ball. Unless you want old gunk hanging around for months, these two toys will last ... very short. I kept each for only a couple of months before tossing them out. The only two I use to this day are the Premier Pet Buddy, Large, and the IQ Treat Ball.

Of all of these, each one has its benefits and shortcomings:

The Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball is the perfect material for my dog - he's not a huge chewer. It hits the wall and makes a gentle "thud" sound. However, with the new design, the hole that dispenses the food is much too large and dispenses a ton of his treats right from the getgo - this is not enough to keep my dog entertained for more than a few minutes! The Omega Ball fits the most food - I believe I can get up to a full cup of kibbles into it. Note that the only way to clean this toy is to put water in it and shake. I made the mistake of putting dishwashing liquid in it, shaking, and trying to get rid of the suds. It didn't happen - the suds persisted. There's a tiny air hole on the other side... not that that helped get rid of the suds. I threw the toy away.

The Premier Pet Busy Buddy Twist N Treat Dog Toy, Medium is my least favorite. Whilst it also does not make a lot of noise, you can't necessarily control how fast food comes out because it relies on twisting it just right- and when the toy is knocked around, it untwists, and just spills out all the food, too - well, at least makes the hole bigger so food comes out much too fast. This is my least favorite food dispensing toy. The Buddy is also the smallest - you can only fit 1/4 to 1/3 cups of food in here if you seal it tight. The one great thing about this toy is that you can actually clean it.

The Premier Pet Busy Buddy Twist N Treat Dog Toy, Large, is my very favorite. It's sturdy, food comes out at a decent pace and when my dog knocks it around, it doesn't cause the opening to get bigger. I can put his entire meal inside this toy (unlike the medium size) easily and it's not a huge balancing act to make sure nothing falls out. I can clean it, and it doesn't roll away like the IQ ball into places my dog cannot reach. It's slow rolling so he can guide it easier. Plus, it's quiet and only makes a gentle thud. No matter the size of your dog, get the large. My dog is a 25-28 pounder. The large is much sturdier than the medium.

The StarMark Interactive toy is very large. You can fit a lot of kibbles in there. That's a bonus. Also, you can make the dispensing method more difficult in two places. However, you cannot open the thing to clean it and I certainly would NOT put water in there, as it's odd shaped, and I really don't like what may happen if I try to pour water in there and shake. I would highly recommend that you start with this toy rather than one of the balls if you plan on buying a StarMark toy. The reason for this is that my dog was used to rolling or pushing a toy to get his food out. So instead of gently nudging the StarMark toy, he would try to roll it, which ended up being really loud for me. He has never figured out that you just need to push the top to get the food out and just pushed harder to get the thing to roll.

Finally, the 5-inch IQ ball is perfect in the sense that it lets you control how fast it dispenses, but it's SO LOUD. My dog gets all worked up at the ball and gets very aggressive with it because of the loud noises it makes. He reacts to the noises and I think it gives him anxiety. Not to mention all the loud clanging makes ME have anxiety. I'm worried the neighbors will complain!

Another thing about the IQ ball is that because it rolls so easily and fast and furious when my dog pushes it and it is so small, it often goes under a piece of furniture so that my dog can't reach it. So much for keeping my dog distracted so I can do other things - I often have to get up and get the ball for him out from underneath a piece of furniture. This was not a problem once for the Premier Pet Busy Buddy Twist N Treat Dog Toy and not so much for the Omega ball because it rolls more slowly and when my dog pushes it, it doesn't travel that far. Obviously this is not a problem for the StarMark toy, as that toy is quite large.

Finally, the IQ ball only fits about a 1/2 cup of kibbles. There is a white enclosure to manage the dispensing of food. You can fit another 1/4 cup above the white enclosure, but it's a pain because you have to make sure none spills over to the side before twisting - hard to explain, but trust me, it's a pain. 3/4 cup of kibbles max, and only a 1/2 cup is easily put in.

We purchased one of these for our 10 pound Malshipoo as she gets bored easily and this thing definitely keeps her busy for awhile while she tries to get the treats out. She rolls and kicks it hard enough that I'm sometimes fearful it will break but after having owned it for 14 months it's actually held together quite nicely to my surprise. I think it came apart once and that's probably because I didn't have it screwed on correctly. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was two things: First, I don't like that the top section is in two parts and you have to fit them together just right for it to screw on. Why not make it one solid piece on the top? The second reason I didn't rate it higher is the white plate with the hole you twist to make the hole bigger or smaller is now a lot looser so when our dog bangs this against a wall or anything hard the hole shifts and makes it bigger thus the game doesn't last as long. So I'm purchasing a new one and hoping this doesn't happen again. I guess it's just wear and tear but I would have like it to last longer than 14 months. Maybe I guess my expectations aren't realistic. Hopefully the next one lasts longer.

My dog loves this treat ball. It took him a little while to figure it out and become interested in it (he started off by trying to chew and lick the top to reach the treats inside), so I removed the white divider to let his kibble fall out a bit more easily. Now he knows he has to roll the ball along for it to dispense his food, I've put the divider back in and it gives him a good 30 minutes of entertainment at mealtimes, which is fantastic for me too because it uses up some of his teenage energy and stimulates his brain :)
With the divider in, the 3" ball holds 1/4 cup of kibble, so I fill it twice for each of his meals. My dog is a 17lb terrier cross, and he can pick this size up with his mouth. We probably would have managed with the 5" size as well.
Word of warning: if you have hardwood and tile floors in your house, this can get quite noisy and the ball will skid all over the place. But it's worth it to see your dog engaged and working for its food :)
