So happy that I subscribed to this magazine..."The Family Handyman". Every issue is Full of interesting and needed information. All my friends want to borrow... I now know what I'm getting friends for Christmas their own subscriptions of "The Family Handyman. The price is quite reasonable for the enjoyment and information
I am a homeowner with a wife and three small kids. I may be the target audience for "The Family Handyman" magazine. I'm not a die-hard DIYer, but I'm eager to learn if I have the time, the job doesn't require specialized training or certification, and the cost savings is there. I absolutely love this magazine and read it cover to cover. The information contained within is worthy of placing the back-issues onto my ever-shrinking book shelf. I've ditched many of my other how-to books. Most of the time I just search the Internet for the knowledge I need, but sometimes I don't even know what I don't know (if you know what I mean). "The Family Handyman" discusses things like preventative maintenance on your home, how to select quality materials for your project, and how to make your DIY project a little cleaner and safer. They also describe the function of tools and explain the use of materials. The diversity of the articles means that I find something in every issue. For example, I'm able to build a wall and install a sink but I'm not as informed about concrete or roofing. This magazine is wonderfully informative, with well written and illustrated articles. I highly recommend for anyone with aspirations of being the family handyman (or handywoman).
I don't think that I've ever written a review about a magazine before. This magazine has earned a review though.
Like a lot of families, we picked up hobbies and projects to do around the house during the pandemic. We started a garden, built bookshelves, made a gardening table out of pallets, etc. We are complete novices at all of these things. Our projects were made much easier with the information in the magazine. It also inspired new projects to add to the list.
The articles are interesting, informative, and inspirational. This may not be a magazine that's popular with skilled people, but it's amazing for us amateurs.
I'm so happy that we came across this magazine. It's provided us with new skills, confidence, and excitement about the things that we can now create. We will be renewing our subscription.
Update April 2021: There seems to be a lot of reviews talking about only getting one issue every couple of months. I want people to understand that a 1 year subscription is 9 issues so don't expect it to show up every month. I would certainly like it to be more regular, but it isn't.
Another comment is the number of adds, every magazine of this type, I have seen, has a lot of adds. That is how we get to pay such low prices. While I have little doubt they have researched the types of adds that might catch the eye of their readers, most of them have nothing to do with me.
I have been an on/off subscriber to this magazine for a lot of years, it keeps getting thinner but the quality of what is in there seems to still be ok. If I had to pay the prices shown in the renewal notices I get with the magazine I wouldn't purchase it, but the price here on Amazon is half that if you time it right.
Original Review: The magazine itself is good, There are a range of types of projects/tips from the "Seen that already" to the "wow that's cool" I tend to use this magazine as inspiration rather than a specific howto.
After I subscribed I received The previous issue and current issue the same day, then 2 weeks later I received the next months issue. To be honest I don't know how to feel about that.
In my case I had already purchased the previous months issue from a store so I didn't need that one. I think I would have rather just had the subscription start with the one that came 2 weeks later.
I have been getting this magazine for years. Sure it has a lot of ads in it... big deal. It's really cheap. It has great tips and project ideas. I may not do all the projects, but it informs how I do my many projects or is a reference for the future. . Every time it comes I usually read through it in one sitting. I reread them every once in a while, and I refresh my memory or learn new things that I wasn't interested in the first time I read it. I often refer to them later when I am working on a specific project. Anyway, it's good stuff and it's fun for someone like me who enjoys casual home improvement and handyman type projects.
Ton of useful info in it, and I am very satisfied with the content so far (received 3 issues). Yes, there are ads but not too much in my view and some repetition on info from one issue to the next, but I always get new ideas and helpful tips from every publication. The magazine may not give you comprehensive, step by step instructions to complete certain project but it will provide some starting points and help you become more creative and skillful. I don't agree with all the overly negative reviews frankly. This magazine is not going to replace a contractor nor make you a handy man suddenly. DIY skills take practice and some talents you are born with. The magazine can only help you so far. With that said, I highly recommend it!
