UH70120 Model
So, I've been watching the Hoover UH70120 for over a year. I missed a huge deal last year and noticed Consumer Reports still favors this model in 2017. I scrolled through my wishlist and noticed the price was low enough to pull the trigger without guilt. Why guilt? I've had, and enjoyed, a Dyson Animal for eight years. It still works perfectly fine, but I suspected that it wasn't cleaning deeply. Why? Because I have low-pile carpet and the Dyson doesn't have different floor settings. But, you spend serious coin on a vacuum - you need it to work for a long time. So, armed with a new vacuum with adjustable height - I went to town. I vacuumed the lower level after running the Dyson. I was able to pick up more dog hair and dirt/dust embedded deeper in my carpet. Woohoo! That alone makes me happy. Now, to the Hoover UH70120. Cord Rewind - a positive upgrade. It comes with standard bits - extension wand, dusting brush, and hand tool (miniature vacuum). The hose is 8 feet (shorter than Dyson), but I like that it doesn't surround a wand. On the Dyson, I had to replace the hose once due to wear and tear. Not a biggie. The Wind Tunnel is standard fare for bagless uprights. It is easy to remove and empty. This vacuum doesn't feel any lighter than the Dyson and I consider them to be a bit heavy. I've taken some pictures which I'll upload shortly. Assembly is required and takes a Philips screwdriver and about 1 minute of time. Two things. One, I will come back to update my opinion at any time there is a change (still runs great, has fallen apart, etc). I expect this to last several years. Two, as mentioned above, CS Buying Guide is: Shark NV581, Hoover UH70120, Dyson Ball Animal, Shark NV755, and Dyson Ball Multi Floor are the top five. The overall scores and price makes this Hoover a pretty solid deal. My only complaint - the cord. Perhaps I've been spoiled - but I wish this cord was longer. I can't vacuum the whole lower level (now) without having to change outlets.

Top reviews from the United States

  • Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2013
I feel this was a good buy. I researched many vacuums (including more expensive models/brands) before deciding on this one. One huge factor for me is that Consumer Reports highly recommended this vacuum. With over 2000 Amazon reviews, this product has a composite ranking of four stars. That's pretty impressive.

Now, I've only had this vacuum for a month, so I can't speak as to the Hoover's longevity yet (I will update this review as time progresses). However, I can give you all of my initial impressions in "Pro" and "Con" form.

Pro: Not too much to assemble and necessary assembly is easy. Directions are simple and clear. Assembling was very quick.

Pro: I feel that this vacuum is fairly light compared to other vacuums. It's probably one of the lightest bagless vacuums I've ever owned. It comparatively easy to push and pull.

Pro: Quiet. Also, compared to the vacuums I've owned, this is the quietest.

Pro: The suction on this vacuum is outstanding. It picks up EVERYTHING and it does that with usually one pass. We have three cats. Stray kitty litter and cat hair are no problem for this vacuum. To give you an idea of the power of this vacuum: My daughter was vacuuming her room and she accidentally passed over her iPod cable. It picked it up and tore it to shreds! The vacuum actually tore through the electrical wire and left it frayed. This leads me to the next "Pro."

Pro: The powerful spinning roller will pick up everything with ease. A big plus is if you get something wrapped around the roller and you can't remove it by pulling, the roller can be removed to take off horribly tangled things (like an iPod cable). Hair wrapped stubbornly around the roller can also be easily removed.

Pro: Very good filtration. With its HEPA filter system, there is no "smell of dust" when you vacuum. The filter is rinsable.

Pro: The attachments are nice. I found that they worked well for me. They are good for crevices and upholstery and drapery.

Pro: The cord is retractable. Some folks have written that the cord became stuck and stayed that way. I make it a point to slowly guide/feed the cord as it retracts. I think this practice will help avoid the cord's getting stuck.

Con: I consider the cord to be short. If you have a large living room, you will probably need an extension cord to cover all of it (if you don't want to keep plugging into numerous outlets). On the chart comparing all the Hoover vacuums, it says the cord length is 25 feet. On the Amazon product description, it says the cord is 27 feet. Regardless, the length of the cord is a nuisance for me.

Con (?): I am surprised by the flimsiness of the cord. It's pretty thin for such a powerful vacuum. Evidently the gauge of the cord is not an issue, but it's surprising.

Con: The hose is rather short. If you need to use an attachment with the hose, you may have a hard time reaching all surfaces.

Con: This model vacuum does not have a headlight. That's a bit of a pain.

Con: Emptying the dirt collection canister is messy. Really, this is true of virtually all bagless vacuums. Make sure you empty in an outside bin. Look away from the bin (and breath from where you are looking) as you bang the dirt collection canister against the inside of the bin. Hold the canister deeply inside the bin. When you finish there will be a cloud of dust that will need to settle and you might have to fish out some fuzz balls by hand. Again, this is no different from any other bagless vacuum I have owned.

Con: The size of the dirt collection canister is a bit small. You might have to make more frequent trips to the bin than you are used to. This is a small price to pay for such an effective cleaning device. (Another possible reason for frequent emptying is that it probably picks up more dirt more quickly.)

Overall, I recommend this vacuum. Granted, I've only had it for a month. However, based on my initial impressions, I think this was a very good buy. Some corners were cut (no headlight, length and gauge of electrical cord, length of hose). However the price is extremely reasonable for such a powerful vacuum. One thing of note: I used this vacuum on carpet only. Hardwood floors, tile, etc., are not a strong point for this vacuum.

As I said, I'll keep updating this review as time goes on.

    UPDATE 7/4/2013:

Con: Well, I have something to add about the electrical cord. As I mentioned above, it is pretty flimsy. I also mentioned above that my daughter's thin wiry Ipod cable was completely torn up when my daughter accidentally passed the vacuum over it. Evidently, I ran over the electrical cord as I was vacuuming. On 7/1/2013, I noticed the cord was frayed and the wiring inside was exposed. Now, I have owned many vacuums, and in all cases, if I accidentally ran over the cord, there were no issues. The fact that this cord is not durable enough to withstand normal wear is unacceptable. I STRONGLY believe that being able to pass the vacuum over its own cord is normal wear.

    Ultimately, Amazon replaced my vacuum.

Con: The on/off switch can not indicate whether the vacuum is in on or off mode. It's simply a a gray push button. If you accidentally push the button while the vacuum is off, then you might get a surprise when you plug the vacuum into an electrical outlet.

Pro: There is a button to secure the hose into the vacuum's intake connection. This is great because the hose never accidentally becomes loose while you are vacuuming.

Con: I was vacuuming with the hose and an attachment. When I went to put the hose back into the intake connection, it would not secure itself. I took a close look and found that the button to secure the hose had popped off. After quite a bit of searching, I found it and it popped back on. This incident was really annoying.

Pro: When the vacuum is getting close to over heating, it shuts itself off. This greatly reduces the risk of burning out the motor.

FINAL THOUGHTS: While this vacuum has phenomenal suction, you are going to have to really baby it. Electrical cord is flimsy and vulnerable to fraying. The button securing the intake hose pops off.

I exchanged my vacuum for the same model after the electrical cord was compromised by fraying. I love the suction ability (it has the best suction of any vacuum I've ever owned). I am willing to baby this machine. If you are also willing to baby this Hoover, then this vacuum might be for you.

UPDATE 12/21/2013 (After over six months of ownership): Our vacuum is still going strong. However, a few days ago I noticed a decrease in suction. Also, the unit would shut down due to overheating very shortly after use began. Well, I called Hoover and I found out that my problem was a dirty air intake filter. All I had to do was wash it (with just water... no detergent). After letting the filter dry for 24 hours, it works great.

UPDATE 11/26/2014 (After 16 months of ownership): Well... this vacuum is awesome! Still has great suction. The HEPA filter had to be replaced. When the vacuum began to lose performance, I called Hoover. Hoover determined that there was a problem with the HEPA filter and THEY SENT ME ONE FREE OF CHARGE!! The 1 year warranty period had passed, but they still sent the replacement for free. Top notch customer service. After replacing the HEPA filter, the vacuum resumed normal performance.

UPDATE 7/23/2015 (After two years of ownership): I am happy to report that thus vacuum is still performing well. I've made sure to clean the filters when necessary. Also, the belt that turns the brush roll snapped from wear. It was easy to replace for just a few bucks. I've accidentally run over the power cord a few more times. This has exposed the outer layer of cord insulation, but the exposure is minor. I would still have liked a higher quality cord, but this one does the job ok.

We are extremely happy with this vacuum. It has excellent longevity. I still have to be careful about running over the cord. Other than that, I have to say it's the best vacuum I've ever owned. Two years of perfect service is quite amazing. Consumer Reports was right about this one. It's definitely a BEST BUY!

UPDATE 10/2016 - We still have this first vacuum, but during Black Friday 2015, we bought a new one. We keep the old one as back up, but it's lost some of its effectiveness. I will never buy any other vacuum though. The new one powers through pet hair, etc. with extreme efficiency (just like the old one). One final note: Take care of your filters, and this vacuum will take good care of you. Use a jet stream hose setting to clean the top blue filter from time to time (then let air dry completely) and regularly check the HEPA filter and shake off the dust that accumulates. You'll need to replace the filters maybe once in a couple years, but it's well worth it.

  • Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2012
I dearly love my dog - a chocolate lab - but as of late the house was starting to smell...not fresh... Perhaps I needed a different vacuum cleaner to replace the canister vac that had finally run it's course. Being of a certain age (that means well into my 50s) I've had many, many years of housecleaning experience. I grew up with a Kenmore canister vac, and I used a Kenmore cansiter vac all my adult life . (No not the same one, I've a had a couple...) I hated the discharge smell from my old vacuum cleaner eventhough I change the bag every single time and I questioned how well it was picking up the pet hair. I did a little internet research, checked with various women folk and concluded I needed a Dyson bagless. Until I priced one. So back to the internet and Consumers Report. And - this model came up as pretty good and not too much money. So eventhough I figure that putting some decent money down for a good appliance is not usually a bad strategy, I decided to go cheap - Dyson $600, Hoover WindTunnel $100. In my mind I could not convince myself that the Dyson was 6 times better. And so I went cheap.

The RESULTS: This Hoover Windtunnel cleaned my rugs like they haven't been cleaned in ages. The sheer amount of gunk that the machine picked up was embarassing. And overnight my house smelled better. And my rugs were brighter. And they were cushier. Really - it lifted the pile. I am pleased, to say the least, and I am willing to put up with its bad points as long as it keeps on cleaning my rugs.

The bad points of this machine? Oh...there are a few...
    1. It's made kinda cheap, no getting around it, but it's only $100 so it's actually pretty good for the money. I only paid $80 for it because of the $20 rebate and no shipping charge because I have Amazon Prime. For $80 I figured if I get a couple of years out of it, I'm still ahead, I don't mind if I have to replace it.

    2. The hose - for heavens sake...you pull it out, put the attachment on, turn on the machine and the suction actually pulls on the hose so you kind of have to fight it to use it. Not so good - but I knew that was going to be an issue from reading the reviews. I was prepared to be underwhelmed...

    3. Got a fair amount of wood floors? Get the model that has a switch for turning off the rotating head. It's not helpful to have the vac whirring around when you are doing bare floors - but again I knew that. I have a broom. And a dust mop. And not alot of bare floors.

    4. The cord is short...at least shorter than what I've had before and shorter than what it should be. So - I get out my orange, three prong, heavy duty, manly extension cord that I took from my husband's shop and use that - and the vac reaches everywhere I need it to without unplugging it 5 times. Yes, I know you are not supposed to use an extension cord with vacuum cleaners, but it's okay if you use the heavy duty kind. No wimpy extension cords that you use for your lamps or Christmas candles on the window sill...

    5. Emptying out the cansiter - no way around it - it's messy. I take it outside and dump it in a bag so the dust is not being reintroduced into the house. And I have to do that a couple of times - because it's still picking up a ton of gunk from my rugs. And that part is rather satisfying - "Look at all the dirt this thing pulled out of the rugs...dear, come and look... really - you gotta see it!!" The novelty will probably wear off in awhile.

    6. The dog doesn't like this vacuum cleaner any better than the last one. Oh well. Too bad for her. Run doggie run.

    ONE YEAR LATER FOLLOW-UP:
Soooo - just about one year later and the machine is still doing just about as well as when I first used it. Still sucking gunk and doggie hair out of the carpets. And still NO SMELL! And yes, I still marvel at the gunk in the canister as I dump it (messily, true) into the garbage. Would I buy another when the time comes? Yes. Do I recommend it? Yes. My daughter-in-law bought one (she has a dog) and loves it; I bought one for my daughter in college (she has a cat) and she loves it. Do the bad points I mentioned above still apply? Well yes, BUT - it hasn't broken yet so we're still good to go. And the dog still hates it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful suction but messy to empty
Reviewed in Canada on December 24, 2016
I bought this vacuum with the extra final filter and belt package The filters are not for this machine, thus a waste of money. I don't know if the extra belts are correct, but hope I won't be disappointed in the future when the belt needs replacing.

The vacuum itself has great suction and cleans carpets well. Too bad the tools don't include a couple of extension wands and a floor brush for hard floors and getting under furniture. The included suction powered tool is only moderately useful as quite a small amount of force to push the brush on furniture etc. will stall the rotating brush.

Bagless is all well and good, but this is messy to empty. Static electricity makes dust stick inside and outside of the container. Fluffy waste has to be pulled out by hand and/or by removing the top of the container in addition to opening the bottom hatch. Definitely have to empty the vacuum outside and into a large bag to try to contain try to contain the dust. Take a soft brush along to sweep off the dust that sticks to the dirt container.

Being able to rinse the filter clean is a good feature. It will clog up with fine dust (more than you want to admit came from your home!) And reduce the suction of the vacuum. It takes about a day to dry the filter, but then the vacuum is back to full power.

This is a decent machine for the price, but my review is made lukewarm by the difficulty in emptying the dirt container.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product and performance for the price
Reviewed in Canada on November 13, 2013
The Hoover T Series Rewind is a good vacuum cleaner with lots of suction and an integrated cord carrying system. I have used this product heavily in the last 3 months and like a lot of things about it with only a few concerns.

This vacuum itself is shipped in two pieces in which can be put together in a matter of seconds. The canister, and tools are all fully assembled so it is pretty much ready to use in a couple of minutes.

The vacuum has a lot of suction and has never had a problem picking up anything whether using attachments or the main unit. It has a height switch to adjust the brushes to varying carpet levels as well as bare floor which it also excels at. It also has a mechanical gauge on the side of the canister that will tell you when the vacuum canister needs to be emptied which can come in handy if you are doing large rooms or not paying attention to the contents of the canister. Granted this gauge still requires you to look down so it still requires the user to be mindful of this. The cord rewind system is great and I have had no problems with it in the three months I have used it. Basically, it is a spring loaded system that loads when you pull the cord out and when you are done with the cord you can pull a lever and the cord winds back up within the unit. The lever to cause the cord to rewind is located on the base of the vacuum near the bottom of the canister and may be intended to use your foot to operate it. I personally use a hand as I feel there will be less chance of breaking it this way. I can see how if this feature was to break it would defeat the point of this model of vacuum and the user would have to find somewhere to store the cord.

The build quality of the vacuum is what is probably expected in most vacuums in the price range, plastic, plastic and more plastic. The vacuum is very light but it does not seem to be structurally rigid and you can feel this especially when you pick it up to take it up stairs. If someone was to be pretty rough with this product I do not know if problems would arise.

Having the HEPA filter and the washable filter is a nice touch as you can have the benefits of both. The washable filter collects a lot of the dirt and can clearly be seen on the underside of the filter when you take it out, and whatever gets through this filter is caught by the HEPA. The advantage here is if you keep the washable filter clean, the HEPA should not have to be changed very often. A cautionary note would be when you wash the filter it can take a long time to dry and you should not plan to vacuum again that day. I live with allergies and I have to say they are not made worse by using this vacuum and I would only look at vacuums with HEPA filters in the future.

I will update in the future describing how the vacuum and the cord rewind system has held up.

    Pros
    -good price
    -lots of suction
    -HEPA and washable filters
    -cord rewind
    -lightweight

    Cons
-plastic construction (long term durability questions?)
-durability of cord rewind system remains to be determined

The suction is great and we have a cat - it is spring and our pet is shedding. The wind tunnel is really picking up the loose hair. That makes the vacuum fabulous in our house. Also it is easy to push around and agile for low cupboards etc. My only concern is that the little latch at the top of the canister is tricky. That is when you go to attach it to the machine after dumping out dirt etc. you need to slide it in carefully or it doesn't catch properly. In other words it takes more time to be really careful than I really want to take when moving around the rooms. However, when it does lock in properly I can lift the vacuum with the handle without fear of having the canister coming off. I am now in the habit of grabbing the vacuum out of the cupboard and using it on the floor rather than the broom I used to grab before for the quick clean-ups. All and all I would certainly recommend the Hoover Wind Tunnel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powreful Vacuum
Reviewed in Canada on March 9, 2016
    - Seems to be a great vacuum. Sucks up stuff we never knew was there. Heavier than it's 20-year old Hoover predecessor, but I expect the motor is more powerful.
    - The attachment hose is very short to be useful except in the immediate vicinity of the vacuum. However we have a canister vacuum for that. This is a replacement for an upright, so the short hose is OK.
    - The inability to turn off the beater would be a shortcoming if we wanted to use the attachments. I understand there is an upgrade model where the beater can be turned off. If you want to use the attachments, that feature would be necessary (otherwise the beater beats the floor/rug all the time you are using the attachments).
    - The cord rewind feels insubstantial and I expect it will be the first thing to go.
    - The easy clean and replace filter system is nicely designed.

    - After all that, it is a very good and powerful upright vacuum!

This is a great vacuum and I'd highly recommend it.
    - Doesn't miss much on tile/carpet/area rugs. bare floor kickback of sand/small stones is minimal (every other one I've had was bad for this!)
    - Retractable chord is the best part if you haven't had one with this feature get one! Retracts very well like that its a foot engaged piece to do this and its a good size/shape to engage with foot (people overlook how important that is.
    - Lighter than most

    Cons
    - Suction hose could be a little stronger (needs a better switch shut off main vac suction so hose gets all).
    - as with most vacs it is missing the shut off the damn beater bar for delicate or high area rugs.
    - bottom roller wheels got squeaky fast nothing a little silicon lube couldn't quiet down
