I used Quicken for two years and finally dropped it three years ago because of constant problems and poor business practices. I easily transitioned to MS Money and found it very intuitive and had almost no problems. Unfortunately, Microsoft has decided to discontinue the product and the search was on for a robust replacement.

I expected that after four years surely Quicken would have cleaned up their act and their product. I knew it had all the features I wanted and decided to give them another try. Regrettably, I have found that the product is only more bloated, less intuitive and more error prone than before. It has taken about eight hours to transition all transactions and accounts. This is something I was able to do with an online alternative I trialled and was able to complete literally in 30 minutes with not a single failure. I still have one credit card account that Quicken cannot import even though other systems handle it just fine. I did not stay with the online alternative because it did not provide all the features that I need.

I am stuck with Quicken for now, but after a month of being reminded why I dropped them before, my search is on again for an alternative. I will drop Quicken as soon as I can because it is a very poor piece of software that tends to continually take many more steps to do anything than is required, few of which are intuitive. I cannot recommend this software to anyone.

I've been using Quicken since the DOS version and since Quicken 2000 it seems to have been getting worse and worse. My biggest complaint is that I'm forced to upgrade about every two years and suffer through new bugs when no significant functionality has been added to the program.

Quicken 2009 does nothing to solve my previous complaints to Quicken over the years. I have made suggestions and reported bugs. No suggestions have been done and some but not all bugs have been fixed. Often bugs get fixed in the next year's release if it's at all near and never get fixed in the current year's program.

    The good:
Quicken is loaded with features and does a decent job of finding previously entered transactions or information for fields. That does make entering data quick in the normal register.

Quicken does update security prices and has a usable investments feature.

The reports in Quicken are relatively flexible and I can usually get the data that I want if not the exact report format that I want.

The import and export data formats are complete and supported by many other programs and web sites.

There is a 60-day money back guarantee. I will give Quicken credit for that although there really aren't any serious alternatives to Quicken. If you return it you have to give up the features that you do like in Quicken.

    The bad:
Users are forced to upgrade just to subscribe for downloading investment data. There is no option to keep previous versions and still download investment data. Each new version introduces bugs, and sometimes known bugs still haven't been fixed from the previous version.

The handling of the edit boxes, drop down lists and anything other than the register is horrible. Fonts are small, list boxes are way too narrow and chop of most of the text unless one uses short abbreviations.

Even if one has a wide screen high resolution monitor most things except the actual register can't be re-sized.

Fonts can't be changed for anything except the register.

If you have bad eyesight, Quicken might not be for you.

In Quicken 2009 there is no way to schedule investment transactions. A bug reported in August last year prevents that from being done. Since Quicken is at the R5 release I would have expected that bug (a simple grayed out dialog control) to be corrected. Even if it is a complicated problem to fix it's a major feature of the program that doesn't work and it has been many months since Quicken was made aware of it.

Entering investment transactions is strange and confusing. I'm always finding myself starting up the Windows calculator program because there are no links to the Quicken calculator for many of the data entry boxes. When Quicken automatically recalculates amounts you have no choice but to let it do that right then and there. It does that on every change of ANY field used in the calculation and afterward it ignores the next mouse click, leaving the mouse in drag mode. This has been a bug in the investment register since 2006. I have to click the Enter / Done button twice if Quicken recalculates the amounts and I have to click the mouse somewhere continue data entry.

The use of the Tab and Shift Tab keys works some places and not others. The paycheck form is the worst example where it works for some boxes but not others.

To be honest I would not buy Quicken if there was any other program that did the things that do work in Quicken. It's a mediocre product with very little competition. Most of the problems in Quicken have to do with the user interface and the user interface seems to get worse every year.

If you don't need to track investment prices daily, and don't need the flexible reporting features then other programs are more user friendly than Quicken. So I say, "Buy Quicken 2009 if you must but beware of bugs". If you don't need to upgrade or buy Quicken then take a serious look at alternatives or wait until the next release. Perhaps it will be better but I'm not making any bets.

This was a pre-emptive upgrade due to Quicken's sunset policy. I previously owned Quicken 2006 and was happily running it on Vista. The good news: it's just as functional as Quicken '06, at least for the features that I use (banking, investing, property and debt). The bad news: I had to upgrade for no significant improvement to the software.

But anyway, don't believe the horror stories about online banking. I initially had the same problems as the other posters, but that was resolved for me in the update to R2 (which you will immediately download), and even prior to the correction was never as horrible for me as other posters describe. Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve, but all-in-all there is no significant difference between Q06 and Q09. This is both good and bad. The good is that the new version contains all of the functionality that I relied upon in Q06. The bad is that Q06 fulfilled my needs nicely... I only had to upgrade because of Intuit's sunset policy... there is no significant improvement to the software... even after three years.

So, don't be scared by the negative posters... it's actually the same Quicken you know (I can only speak from '99, since that's the version that I started with). However, do be scared by Intuit. Their forced upgrade policy is a matter of record, and with Quicken online I am seriously concerned that some... if not most.. of the functionality that I use and expect with the desktop version will soon be a thing of the past. This may or may not be a reason to upgrade to Quicken 2009 now.
