Product Description
The Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition is an activity the entire family will enjoy. Based on the tradition Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed children's book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. The elf watches the children's behavior and reports it back to Santa each night. By morning the elf returns to its assigned home and hides in a different location, allowing the children to play a delightful hide-and-seek game. Each product comes with its very own elf doll enabling others to begin this fun-filled Christmas tradition themselves. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition includes an exquisite 10 x 10 inch hardbound children's book, illustrated by award winning artist Coe Steinwart, a vintage like pixie elf doll that sits approximately 8 inches tall, and a certificate commemorating the adoption of the elf by a family, teacher, or other group. Additionally, this unique gift includes a festive keepsake box for convenient storage. The purchase of The Elf on the Shelf allows you to give more than a gift. Instead, you are giving a priceless treasure, the creation of lasting memories.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2012I was so nervous to try this out. I didn't want to blow Christmas/Santa for my 6 year old. I worried that he might not buy into it, and therefore might not buy into Santa anymore either (he might start questioning it all). I think it's incredibly important how you introduce this, so make sure you put a lot of thought into it. I decided to create a letter from Santa & snuck it into our mailbox (and had my 6 year old get the mail that day). Santa told them (6 & 3 year old boy) that because there are so many children in the world for him to watch over, he's decided to send one of his elves to watch over our family. I think it's incredibly important to immediately address WHY you're getting an elf right now (when you didn't before) and why YOUR house is getting one, when not everyone's house has one (I was worried about kids at school). Santa's letter announced that the elf would be arriving that night, so to watch for him in the morning. The next morning the elf showed up sitting up in the Christmas tree, with the book about him underneath the tree, and a handwritten letter (Mom's left-handed writing). It was a flawless entrance, and my 6 year old believes it all even MORE than my 3 year old! He was instantly writing letters back to Santa, asking our elf to take it back to Santa that night, etc. The rest of the month was SO fun, not only for the magic in my kids faces each morning, but for the fun my husband and I had each evening getting the elf set up in new fun ways. Make sure you have a plan in place for if they touch him (there need to be consequences or they won't believe he's magical), and make sure to set a daily reminder on your cell phone (I did 10pm). You don't want to blow it by not having moved him one day. They almost cried the day he had to say goodbye! On the last day he was holding baby Jesus from our nativity, leaving a note to remember that while Santa & presents are fun, remember that Jesus is the real meaning of Christmas (we're quite religious normally, so I had to tie it in somehow, without being the lame family that doesn't allow Santa stuff at all). ;) Definitely recommend!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2011I was a little hesitant purchasing The Elf on the Shelf, because I don't try to focus Christmas entirely on the Santa aspect, but more on the giving aspect. I broke down and got one this year figuring if I really didn't like it or thought it put too much emphasis on gifts that I could tell my son that Santa decided he was good enough he didn't need to send the elf for following years. The night after Thanksgiving our Elf landed on our mantel. I called my son (almost 4) and daughter (22 months) in the room and my husband and I read the book to them and explained the process and rules of our new house guest. I never could've imagined how interactive this little guy would be.
My son insisted that his name is Elfey, and is so excited to talk to him every morning. He is genuinely concered about how is trip was and if he got too cold. I absolutely love listening to their one-sided conversation. He knows that if he is naughty Elfey will have to tell Santa and that he may not get his Santa gift this year.
The only downside I can see is that my son is already sad at the thought that Elfey will go back to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve and will be gone for an entire year...Hopefully the gift Santa leaves will alleviate this dreaded time.
This doll is a great size big enough that my kids can spot him no matter where he decides to land for the day, but small enough that he can fit in/on anything, he even decided to perch on our Christmas tree one day. He has a great little face that adds a lot of character and life to the little doll. The book says the kids aren't allowed to touch the elf, which is why it's okay that Elfey isn't the most durable "toy" around. I have no doubt he will be more than able to survive the years of perching around my house for my kids and possibly even grandkids.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2012Honestly this is one of those purchases that make it worth spending the money. We bought the Elf on the Shelf for the first time this year. At first I was hesitant, wondering if the elf idea was a bit too boring for our three daughters. I was especially worried that the oldest wouldn't find the elf interesting (she is nine). Boy was I wrong!!
We purchased the elf on the shelf at the end of November and our three girls (6,7, and 9) immediately loved it. Each day they had a lot of fun finding him around the house. It was also very fun for my husband and me as we got to be creative on where to hide him. The excitement in our girls' eyes was priceless and they really got attached to our elf which they named Scout. Every night they'd take a little espresso plate and cut up little pieces of food....that was his dinner. They were always very excited in the morning to see what he had eaten and what he had left in the plate.
When last week it was time for the elf to leave, our girls actually cried! My husband and I were tearing up too. It's funny to see how a little stuffed toy can actually bring so much magic and love in a home. Worth the money. Buy it for your kids next holiday season. You won't regret it.
One CON with the Elf on the Shelf: the way he is made makes it very hard to position him. The possibilities are endless as you can hide him anywhere and make him do whatever he wants...in theory. He doesn't bend easily as he is entirely made of fabric. It would be nicer if his limbs would actually criss cross or wrap around things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elf on a Shelf, making fun traditions
I love this idea. We have 1 elf for our older son, and I just purchased a second one for my younger son. I love the idea and it makes for a fun tradition, and my kids love finding our elf, Simon, everyday.
Whoever thought of this, was brilliant!
This is a must buy for kids. These elfs will be passed down to my kids when then have kids.
This really is fun for the whole family and I love the story book that comes with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great family tradition, the kids love it!
Our Elf's name is Elliot. He shows up near the end of November every year. Not only is it great fun but mention Elliot's name once when my five year old is acting up, the bad behavior changes instantaneously (he reports back to Santa every night). I love it so much that I went out and told my friends with kids about it and their own Elf showed up!
