This definitely has an interesting smell when you open the package. They are the only vanilla beans I ever buy though due to the quantity/price so I really have nothing to compare it to. I have never gotten a bag with mold in it and I buy these every few months for my homemade vanilla stockpile. They make absolutely delicious vanilla extract. I use about 6 beans for 8 oz of vodka. I slice the pods in half and then slice them open and put them in the bottle. Comes out perfect every time.

    These are excellent beans. I bought these to restock my homemade vanilla supply and they work very well for that purpose. The beans seem very fresh and release oils into alcohol very quickly. I have been storing the leftover beans from my purchase for a couple months now, using them occasionally, and I have had no issues with mold. I also purchased beans from this seller over a year ago and those beans lasted for close to a year with no issues other than they oils started to dry out.

    I always follow the same procedure to store my beans and I believe it is what allows them to last such a long time. Immediately after purchase, I move them to the cupboard in the kitchen that gets opened the least to reduce exposure to light/sunlight. After opening the sealed package and using them for the first time, I wrap the packaging up tight and place it inside a ziplock bag. Then, I make sure that I have gotten every last bit of air out of the outer bag (it looks like it was resealed with a vacuum by the time I'm done squeezing all the air out) and place it back in the seldom used cupboard. The lack of sunlight reduces any evaporation that may occur from heat exposure and the air tight bag helps hold moisture and oils against the surface of the beans, keeping them fresher, longer. It is also important that your storage cupboard isn't directly adjacent to a major heat source. If your least used cupboard is above the stove or right next to the oven or dishwasher, there is going to be more heat buildup which will accelerate evaporation and dry the beans out faster.

    I have purchased vanilla beans from another seller on amazon before. A very small packadge of only five beans. They were my first experience buying beans, and I did not want to purchase a large amount if I was unhappy with them. They were okay, somewhat moist, and they smelled of vanilla, but they are NOTHING compared to these beans!

    I opened my mailbox, and the scent of vanilla came wafting out! All of my mail smelled of vanilla THROUGH the padded paper envelope and plastic sealed bag these beans came in. The scent is so powerful, and so tasty! I did not have time to unseal the plastic bag before I had to leave the house, but even so, the glass jar that I placed the beans in smells strongly of vanilla upon opening the lid.

    After I opened the bag, I removed a bean to test the moist-ness(is that a word?) and flexibility. They are very very moist, and give readily to gentle pressure. After placing the bean back in the bag, my hands smelled very strongly of vanilla.

    Compared to the last beans I bought, and my only perspective on vanilla, these beans are exceptionally easy to split and scrape. I am thrilled. I wonder if these beans will make a better home made vanilla extract than the last batch...

    I ordered this product hoping that I would get a great product, and was not disappointed. The vanilla beans arrived before the first day of the estimated date of delivery!! When I finally got them un-boxed and could get my first look & feel, I was not disappointed. Nice long, plump, and juicy. Upon opening I got a wonderful hit of vanilla and knew I was in for a real treat. Once I had the ones out I needed I noticed they had a nice black glossy color and nice plump feel to them. Slicing them open was extremely easy, and revealed copious amounts of gooey black seeds.

    As of right now they have been halved lengthwise, then cut into 1/2 inch sections, put into a stoppered bottle with 80 proof brandy, and are being left in a cool to moderate temperature completely dark cupboard for the next 6 months. I'll shake it up every 1 or 2 days for the first month, then twice a week for the next month, then once a week for the last 4 months. Sounds involved but it only takes a few seconds each time to shake it.

    I am extremely happy to have made this purchase! I will definitely be buying from this seller again in the near and far futures. Great product guys, keep up the excellent work!
