Included in this dynamic kit are the following components: red cabbage juice powder, citric acid, color tablets, polyacrylamide crystals, a pipette, small and medium scoops, and three plastic cups. Only basic supplies are required but not included, such as water, towels, a plate or tray to catch spills, and a stirring spoon. Although none of the experiments included in this kit are especially messy, each one should be done on a flat surface that can be easily wiped clean in case of spills.
Adults who are supervising experiments do not need to be science gurus. In addition to step-by-step instructions for each experiment, the detailed science guide included with this kit provides adults with "mind blowing science secrets" that help to answer questions about what's happening in each experiment. All of the materials and experiments involve basic scientific concepts associated with acidic and basic liquids and are arranged to present these concepts in sequential order. The descriptions included in the science guide give background information related to each reaction and offer questions that adults can ask to help encourage fun learning during experimentation.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2010I got this kit for my 5-year-old daughter who loves doing little experiments and I decided to try this kit out. It comes with a set of items that facilitate a range of relatively easy and fun experiments. The kit contains: red cabbage juice powder, citric acid, baking soda, color tablets, cross-linked polyacrylamide crystals, vegetable oil, corn starch, 2 sheets of goldenrod paper, 2 cotton swabs, 3 test tubes and caps, 3 clear plastic cups, 1 pipette (in the form of an eye dropper), 2 stir sticks, 1 small plastic scoop, and 1 medium plastic scoop. The experiments also call for some basic and easy-to-find household items such as water, baking flour, plate/tray, tape, red and blue pens, grape juice, coffee filter paper, etc.
An older child may be able to conduct these experiments by him/herself though I feel adult supervision is necessary (it is also recommended by the manufacturer). I had to help my daughter with some parts of the experiments, especially those involving the use of citric acid. The experiments included here are:
Dancing Powders
Color changing liquids
Acid or Base? - involves testing some safe household liquids to determine if they are acids or bases.
Colorful Jiggle Crystals - we had so much fun with these! It does require patience as it takes up to 2 hours for the crystals to absorb the water and form into soft crystals.
Test tube sunset
Giant Jiggly Crystals
Color Changing Volcano - this was awesome! We started on a modest scale making a small volcano, then I adapted the recipe and made a bigger one with bigger fizzy effects, to my preschooler's delight!
Underwater Volcano
Color Changing Paper
Color Changing Grapes
Magic Ooze
Mix Colors with your eyes - mixing colors without them touching each other.
Each experiment comes with detailed step by step instructions, and also a segment titled "Mind Blowing Science Secrets" which I found quite educational.
Final verdict - this is an excellent beginner science kit that will motivate young children and enhance their interest in science. The experiments are easy to produce and great fun - definitely worth the money!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2016Are the majority of these experiments something you could do yourself with some citric acid and baking soda? Absolutely. In fact, my daughter used some of my household supply to extend an experiment she had done in the kit.
Sure, you can make your own red cabbage extract... but if you are like me, you won't. Because you did for a homeschool experiment 10 years ago with your oldest child, and you still remember what a horrible mess it was.
Some of the experiments are repetitive, but that's a good thing for early childhood.
And cornstarch and water? Everyone knows that one. (if you don't, google it. Too much fun to miss).
But the point is, I had not done any of these experiments with my daughter until we got this box. This has everything in one box, with all the equipment-- including a stand for the test tubes, which another review didn't have for some reason. (And get a little bag superabsorbent polymers, too. Those little buggers are fun but somehow end up everywhere). It's fun, it's easy, there are some experiments that require patience, which is really good for this age group. We are most of the way through the kit, doing maybe three experiments a week, and now I am shopping for more kits. Because even though I have the equipment, the books, and the education to diy the whole thing... the kit is easy, fun, and we actually DO it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2017So much fun!!!! I thought tho, that I read on the reviews or somewhere around here that it was for ages 4+ but the box says 6+.
Oh well.
I’ve been doing this experiences with a 4 year old and he loves it!
I have just a few complaints about the actual “recipes”
I hate that they don’t give us a more detailed quantity especially for liquids. They just say “fill 1/3 of the cup”...
sure. The kit comes with 3 little plastic cups and it’s easy least to fill those up to the quantity asked. Like the 1/3 BUT! Guess what!?!
The cups are gone already (broke, got lost, you know how it goes with kids) and now what!?!?
We don’t have cups the same size as those?!? Will 1/3 cup on our cup work?!?
If they had added some measurement in oz or something it would make things easier.
Also the volcano recipe. It was soooo much fun and the kid loved it. But holy moly what a tiny tiny tiny volcano that recipe makes. We had only enough thing to make a volcano less than an inch tall. Lol I mean. Seriously?!? (Nothing like the photo on the advertisement here. Lol I mean a simple note like double the recipe for a larger volcano would do)
Lol
We are def going to triple or quadruple the recipe so we can have a decent size volcano.
Doesn’t need to be big but come on. That was was too tiny!
But overall it’s teally fun. With the 4 year old I don’t go too deep into the science, just enough that he can understand and he loves it. Now he is the one who asks me if we can work on our experiments. Lol.
