My daughter, age 7, LOVES to play the two-player version of Mancala (which is the only version I had ever seen.) So when I saw this game, I had to get it for her. She loves playing it with the whole family instead of just one other person. I find the 2-player version to be more fun, but this is a nice change for something different to play while including more people. She seems to enjoy both versions equally. The quality of the wood is nice with a smooth feel (although much lighter in color than pictured) and it seems to be pretty sturdy. The marbles are different colors as well as sizes...some very small, but that doesn't affect play.
Mancala is a really fun game for the entire family. We have Mancala for two players, but the Square Root Games board enables up to four people to play at the same time, just making it more fun. My 5 and a half year old grand-daughter plays and can even beat us sometimes ... proof that this is a game for all ages. This board folds in two for storage and is well made and well worth the price.
Our kids (4 and 6) love Mancala, and when we saw this, we thought it would make a great game for all of us to play together. It is played very similarly to the traditional mancala. Instead of two rows, players deposit their marbles around the board in the square. It is very easy to transition from the two player version to the four. I would recommend starting with the two player if you have younger kids. The four player may be too complex at first if they don't already know the game. For older kids, I doubt it would be a problem. This is a great multi-generational game and excellent and teaching counting and strategy.
Before this I had never played Mancala with four players or even knew that it was possible. My 6 year old son loves playing it and plays it all the time at school. I was looking for a nice board game that was fun, easy to set up and didn't require hours of playing time (my family owns and enjoys monopoly, but you know one game of that can be pretty lengthy). When I saw this 4 player Mancala set, I didn't hesitate in buying it.. this was just what I was searching for! The board sets up in just a few minutes, individual games aren't as langthy, and you can play with 2, 3, or 4 players (unlike the normal 2 player Mancala sets).
The product itself is very nice. The board is made of a nice wood, the stones are colorfyul and durable, and it folds in half for easy storage and/or travel. It does not look cheaply made and it feels very durable. rules are easy to follow and as long as you can count, you can play!
We love playing this game and at time I get it out just to calm some crazy kids ;-). But we love it. I was excited when I found one that let's 4 play. Perfect for our home. It is well made. A bit smaller then I had thought but perfect. The price has changed since I bought it first. SO you may want to keep an eye out for perhaps a cheaper price as it is posted right now. But I never saw one for 4 players till this one. Loving it.
This game is addictive and has become a staple of family game night, which is something it's 2-player sibling couldn't be. The slight changes to the rules to accommodate 4 players are thoughtful and add a new level of competition to the game. There should be one in every home!
They only included marbles for 3 players, not 4. Instructions are very confusing. We ended up making up our own rules. Then put it away. If you can come up with some great rules (and another set of marbles) - you will be set. It's a great idea for 4 people - but-- just didn't really work. The board itself is well made, and the marbles were nice quality. Maybe in my spare time I'll come up with new rules, and voila!! A workable game!
