Product Description

Product Description

Two simple, fast paced games to improve valuable math skills that kids will use all their lives: making change and budgeting money.

Amazon.com

Created by a volunteer math aide in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Moneywise Kids contains two simple, fun games that will help kids understand how money works, in terms of dollar value and spending power. In the first game, Bill Maker, kids take turns rolling the dice and earning dollars that are commensurate with the numbers that come up: roll a 2 and a 6, for instance, and you get $8. As they accrue wealth with each turn, players exchange smaller bills for larger ones until someone winds up with $100. In the second game, Bill Breaker, each player starts with $100 and earns more money with each turn, but players must also draw "moneywise markers"--bills for such real-life expenses as food, medical care, and taxes--and make payments along the way. And watch out for those hard-luck chips that mean big bills. The player who collects all six markers and still has $100 in savings is the winner. The game is lively and only lightly competitive, with an accent on grasping the mysteries of dollars and cents. --Tom Keogh

I am a conscientious mom, my kids are well educated, well traveled, broad readers and socially confident. SO HOW COULD I HAVE COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN TO MENTION OR TEACH ANYTHING, AT ALL, EVER ABOUT MONEY? Urrrgh! I knew this wasn't going to work if I sat them down and said..."this is a dime, its worth 10 cents or 10 pennies..." I can already hear the snoring. This sounded okay so I gave it a try. AMAZING. The kids love it! The idea is that you start with $100. You have to acquire budgetary items like insurance, tax payments, etc. You choose whether or not to invest in these things. Obviously if you choose not to you are more vulnerable to loss. You roll the dice and that's how you gain money. Every time you pay money, you take the bill and have to make change in the smallest denominations, which teaches basically fractions of money and how each different bill relates to another. I hope I didn't make it sound complicated because it IS NOT. Kids love it from my 6 to my 8 year old. Now I send money with them to school when I have one of those mornings where I can't make lunch because I know they are competent. My 4 year old and I play as a team and even he is picking up some understanding of money matters. YOU WON'T GO WRONG with this one!

Great game to teach a child the basics of money and basic necessities that must be paid for, along with the occasional pothole hit that you have to pay for. But only teaches you to make it in the "rat race". A quick game easy to play before bed.
Monopoly is better to teach them how an investment quickly makes you passive income regardless of circumstances. As is Rich Dad Poor Dad games which introduce them to stocks, bonds, real estate etc and how to get above the rat race. Def recommend Money Wise Kids as an introduction to managing money. It says ages 8 and up- but my kids could have played this at 5 or 6 since they've been playing child monopoly since they were 5 and we include them in many discussions on how money is managed. My kids request to play this game several times a month.

I purchased this game for my 5 year old girl. She seems to like it. It is a game that she is willing to play, but it is never her first pick. It does seem to be a good way to introduce money, but if you want your child to understand the value of money I don't think this game will help. Ex: health care is $10 and a place to live is only $30 (I wish!!)

Ok, I'm actually going to say I have no idea what was going through my head when I bought this. I know I read that it was a great idea in some blog or something somewhere, and I just purchased it without thinking for my daughter when she was younger. We only played it once, because she said it was super boring. So, I ended up doing different things to teach her about money. Turns out, kiddos are very motivated to learn how to distinguish the coins if you grab a handful of change from your purse and say "you get to keep whatever you can correctly name and tell me how much it's worth." And they're much more motivated to learn about money when they have to pay for some of their own toys. For my angel, for the past two years we've had a two part chore system. There are a couple of chores she has to do each day without pay, just because that's how life works, and if she wants to earn money, there is a list of easy chores and an amount earned assigned to each that she can choose from. And we talk about all of the same type of issues that this game would as we're planning her purchases, or as we explain our reasoning for why we are or aren't doing something in real life.

So, technically, there's nothing wrong with this game. And some kiddos may find it useful, I just looking back have no idea why I actually purchased this. Yes, the bills look like smaller versions of real life money...but, there aren't any coins that look like the coins we use, so that's eliminating a big part of working with currency so to speak. And, it actually seemed much more interesting to her when she actually got to see real life money an apply it to her own purchases, that sort of thing. So this morning, I am putting this in excellent, barely used condition into a donation box. Best of luck to you...

When my child received a $20 bill and wanted to get 20 $1 bills because they thought it was more money, I decided this was the perfect time to purchase Moneywise Kids. This game works wonderfully for this. Do I think this has long-term play potential? Probably not. Only time will tell. I am using this so that my children will be able to handle real money with confidence and without having to think about it. Repetition of these concepts during the game will make purchasing items in the real world less intimidating.

Of course the cost of items in the second version of the game is not realistic. That is not the point. What matters is that they figure out when they buy something that costs $15, they know which denominations of bills they can use to purchase it. Do they want to break a $50? How much change will you get back? How many ways can you break a $50? Etc.

      Well worth the price.

If your kids are just learning money, this is an ideal game to get them to understand money in a practical everyday way. I knocked it down one star because of the small value of everything... Like a bike costing 25 cents. I'm trying to teach the real value and I got stuck on the value vs. the cost. Otherwise it's a great easy game that helps reinforce the concepts.

My kids really enjoyed this game for a couple of days. They were still figuring it out and excited to "master" it. The novelty wore off pretty quickly after that. Faster than in many other games they have. They did learn some valuable things from it, but that's where it ended.

We did not receive the play money as pictured and I can't seem to find how to contact the seller. Purchased for my granddaughter with now way to play it, I supposed I could go buy play money, but assumed the came would come with all necessary components.
