Monopoly

Amazon.com

In 1934, in the midst of the Great Depression, an unemployed heating engineer from Pennsylvania created the game of Monopoly. Realizing that his get-rich theme might appeal to other Americans, he had the game printed and distributed in a Philadelphia department store. When he couldn't keep up with the overwhelming requests for more sets, he arranged for Parker Brothers to take over the game. And the rest, as they say, is history. But Monopoly is far from a quaint historical relic. To this day, it remains a riveting game of luck, chance, and savvy wheeling and dealing--all of which can make some lucky dog rich, rich, rich! Based on the purchase of Atlantic City real estate (a city currently renowned for its get-rich gambling opportunities), Monopoly is now printed in 26 languages with more than 200 million sets sold worldwide. Players still scoot the same beloved board pieces: the old shoe, the terrier, and the hot rod. This set also includes rules for a shortened version of the game and a new token, winner of Monopoly's recent "design a token" contest. This is capitalism at its most fun and ruthless, a must-have edition in the family game closet. --Gail Hudson

A classic board game that brings loads of fun to family game night! Race around the board buying up properties and building houses and hotels. But don’t go bankrupt and try to stay out of jail! Unless you’re just visiting of course!

Perfect, and such a great deal! Some users have reported that this is a alternative version with differences such as alternative colors, prices, and pieces. I bought a used version in which the seller noted "original version" in the condition notes. Aside from some water damage on the box, the game inside is perfect. For $3 and prime shipping, I'm happy!

I had so much fun playing this game as a child I gave it to my best friends famiy for Saturday night game night with the family. Everyone just enjoys it. Can't go wrong buying this for your family or giving it as a gift. It's also a great way to get the family away from the electronics and to actually think with their brains .... lol.

Grandma loved this game, and we still do, because it allows any player with the greatest greed and the most dogged determination to eventually own everything. We kids, under Grandma's skilled tutelage, quickly grasped that any "ownership" game (real estate, commodities, operating-system software, TV stations, whatever) could eventually concentrate in the hands of a ruthless elite, especially in the absence of truly fair-minded "government." Highly educational!

But the game should not be so focused on mere "real estate." The things missing in Monopoly (then and now) are opportunities for: predatory pricing; ownership and control of the mass-media (and public opinion) by mega-corporations; cutting taxes to pump up the national debt which future players (your kids) will owe to The Bank; and clever use of armed forces to occupy and defend other countries' natural resources against foreign invasion or at least against use by local populations. Maybe those extra features could go into a future "MONOPOLY - Grand Theft Petroleum" edition?

Wonderful classic board game, but be sure Junior gets adult supervision or he'll grow up imagining that playing Monopoly is even better than "moral values."

It's Monopoly! Any questions?! If you haven't ever played it, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!?! Sure games could last a few hours, but you're creating memories! We sometimes just call it quits in the middle and add up money/properties to determine a winner when kids (wife) start feeling tired of playing! haha

Thinner property, community chest, and chance cards. Less money. Quad fold (instead of bi-fold) board that doesn't lay flat. Money tray ("bank") is a flimsy joke. It is still Monopoly and it works but spend the little bit of extra cash and get the classic version.
