DENISE AND ALAN FIELDS have sold 2 million books, focused on navigating the consumer maze of life's biggest decisions: getting married, having a baby and raising children. But how do two seemingly normal people end up writing consumer books for a living?

The Fields met while attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. Denise was a history major specializing in Elizabethan England; Alan was in the business school, studying the marketing of products to Albania. We wish there was some fairy-tale story about how the couple met, but it is actually quite boring--they ran into each other in a dormitory during the infamous Bronco Blizzard.

Denise and Alan became writers because they couldn't find any other gainful employment. After college, Denise realized that the unemployment rate for Elizabethan England scholars was 132%. Alan's career as a college newspaper columnist and disc jockey fizzled out as well. Since they had a lot of free time, they authored a small book called Austin Weddings, about their travails planning their own wedding in the capital of Texas (where they had moved after graduating from CU).

Then something clicked. The Fields' consumer advice was a hit with brides and the book became a local best-seller. Realizing they had perhaps found a way to make a living without having to get real jobs, Denise and Alan turned out wedding guides to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, San Diego and Denver.

By this time, the Fields recognized something most other so-called wedding experts refused to admit. Forget all this fancy etiquette stuff--what brides and grooms really wanted to know was how to get a good deal on the items for their wedding. Following that theme, the Fields wrote their first national book on weddings, Bridal Bargains.

To say the book was unpopular among members of the "wedding industry" was an understatement. The Fields were banned from attending bridal shows; an editor from a major bridal magazine lambasted the Fields in a letter to the Wall Street Journal. Fortunately, the Fields did have one fan in the media--a talk show host by the name of Oprah Winfrey. Oprah told her viewers to buy the book. 400,000 copies later, the book is the Fields best-selling title to date.

After Oprah, the Fields embarked on their next greatest adventure. They built a new home. And like everything they would do in their lives, the experience inspired a book of its own: Your New House, was picked as one of the top 10 real estate books in 1993 by the San Francisco Examiner. "This book is, by far, the best book available on how to buy or build a new home," raved syndicated columnist Robert Bruss, imploring his readers to buy the book. Your New House was revised for a second edition in 1996, and again in 1999 for a third edition.

Baby Bargains, the Fields' third book, was inspired by the birth of their son, Benjamin in 1993. The book (which debuted in 1994) was also featured on Oprah, the Today Show and in Child Magazine. The Fields scoured the country for the best deals on cribs, bedding, maternity clothes and more. Next, they interviewed more than 100 first-time parents across the country, who provided insights into which baby products were best buys-and which were wastes of money. Baby Bargains' editor's panel of juvenile products retailers provided crucial safety and technical background for the book's extensive list of recommended brands and products. The birth of the Fields second son (Jack) in November 1996 inspired the release of the 2nd edition of this book in March 1997. The 3rd edition of Baby Bargains was released in March 1999, with updated material, new bargains and more.

The Fields' latest book is Baby 411, co-authored by Dr. Ari Brown. Baby 411 is the ultimate FAQ for new parents. Written in an easy-to-read question and answer format, Baby 411 explores infant health from a fresh and non-judgemental approach.

If you liked Baby 411, you'll love Toddler 411---the sequel! All your questions on toddlers, answered! And now, Expecting 411 joins the 411 family, with detailed advice on pregnancy and child birth.

The Fields currently live in Boulder, CO with their sons Ben and Jack.

My wife and I are expecting our first (any day now) and this book has been such a huge help to us in trying to navigate the quandary of the mass of baby items that exist to make sure that our baby is the happiest on the block. As the expecting father, I found myself perplexed in trying to find out what might be best for our little one. How would one even know what to expect when expecting when there are so many options that exist in our quest to be baby wise? How does one go about breastfeeding, made simple, when there are so many options to pump said breasts, store said breast milk and dispense the same to the child (once they're ready for the bottle, of course). What crib might work to provide happy sleep habits for a happy child or to help ensure that you'll practice unconditional parenting?

Baby bargains did not, in fact, help us to find any huge savings (but we're above average in our savings searching) per se. What the book did help us to do was to sort through what seemed to be a crushing load of gadgets, cribs, strollers, etc. My wife has even been in touch with the folks that write the book about several items and has found them to be super receptive and helpful. I think that this is a great STARTING point in doing research for whatever you're looking for in providing for your little one. Baby Bargains provides a pretty simple to understand grading scale (A to F) that works as a launching point to do a little more research (perhaps with Amazon.com reviews or something of the sort). Where the book did save us some flow, was in telling us what was not really necessary for our newborn in the way of new purchases.

To sum up, Baby Bargains helps to find the best value for what you pay - it seeks to find what will be safest for your baby (which is, of course, where the bargains really come in). This book has helped us to be some of the least stressed parents on the block, in any case.

On a side note - how many book titles can you count in this review? :-)

As (soon-to-be) first time parents we have a lot of questions. Before buying the book, we had already bought our crib, changing table, registered, and were on our way. We felt quite confident in our decisions, although they were hard to make. Getting advice from friends and family on what to get can be quite overwhelming.

As an example -This book may have helped us from making a mistake that would have endangered our baby. The crib that we bought was the worst crib that you could by on the market. The brand (Delta) had the biggest major recall in the U.S. in 2008, and had been recalled earlier for lead paint, etc. Needless to say, we are thankful that we never took it out of the box, and returned it the same day we read about it in Baby Bargains. This information was not readily available on the web, especially for first time parents who have no clue where to look.

This book helped us make important safety decision in regards to everything baby. It warned us about Delta, but made us feel confident about our travel system choice, among other things.

The book Baby Bargain refers to saving money, or cutting back, when having a baby. Most excellent for this economy. However, most of the information is common sense, and the other you could probably find on the Internet. They claim that the book will help you save more than 250 dollars when preparing for a baby, they actually guarantee it. I do not necessarily believe that, but with respect to our crib...I feel that information was/is priceless!!

    Thanks Baby Bargain!!!

This book caused me to compulsively gift register for things I didn't really need. I ended up with a booster seat that at 2 years old, my son is still too msall for, so it is gathering dust and taking up space in a closet. And after buying the suggested carseat, a Chico keyfit, I realized that it only fits kids up to 25lbs, and my bookster is for kids that are 30lbs plus, so for the year that my son has weighed between 25lb and 30lbs I had to buy a THIRD $200 carseat! How frustrating!
Also, the best advice a mom could posssibly ever get- Reigster at Diapers.com NOT Babies R Us... is not in this book! Babies R Us won't let you return gifts, even if they were purchased at the store and are on your registery, after a short window has expired. So if people buy you gifts for a baby shower, and you end up with multiple items, you may not be able to return the multiples items to Babies R Us after the baby is born because the window has expired. Diapers.com, ships free, is CHEAPER, has wonderful service, and gives you 365 days to return! Much better! This is the type of advice I was expecting from this book!
Still I give it 4 stars because the advice they provide is good and helpful in navigating the confusing world of baby products.
