- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2012When I started buying cookbooks for two, I skipped over this book initially because it seemed as if it might be geared toward romantic cooking and I wanted homestyle! Boy, am I glad I got over that. I've cooked more than half the recipes in this book and all are delicious. Not only that, but most are easy and don't take all day to prepare but taste and look as if they do. Plus, except for the seafood recipes, most are made with ingredients one would have on hand or would add when grocery shopping. Finally, even though many are homestyle, they would certainly work for a romantic dinner--try the Cioppino, page 21 along with his wine and bread suggestions, wow so good.
When I was a girl scout we had camp fire stew at camp because it could be cooked over a camp fire. Simply brown hamburger, add Campbell's vegetable soup and eat up a really great meal. Well, being all grown up now and concerned about my health, I don't eat very much canned food. Well, miracle of all miracles, the hearty vegetable beef soup in this book tastes just like campfire stew, yet it's made with my own ingredients--no canned soup here. And the chicken soup, my goodness. I make a pot of that once a month at least. The best ever. And, finally, the seemingly simply preparation of vegetables in that section turns out wonderful concoctions; for instance, the carrots with poppy seeds and noodles--so good. I tripled one of the green bean recipes for thanksgiving and every last one was eaten. That recipe is so simple but something happens to the taste of the beans in this recipe. I bake the shrimp and salmon cakes in muffin tins and serve with his suggested roasted red potatoes and creamed spinach. Many recipes suggest vegetable dishes to serve along side the main course. I could go recipe by recipe but really there are no recipes to pass over in this cookbook.
I too hope Mr. Caterson writes another cookbook soon. I reach for this cookbook more than any other. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2015I am so glad I ordered this collection of uncomplicated recipes for two, though I am just a "one" household. I use paperclips to make those I want to try when I review a new cookbook and I am quickly running low on paperclips! I am tired of making bulk recipes that are then
divided up into freezer meals all the time. I don't cook fancy, time consuming meals for myself, but I do appreciate the ones in this book as they are a big step above ordinary. These recipes are awesome! I also got his other book "Back for Seconds" and will move on to mark that book as well. I will have to get a few ingredients not in my kitchen: white wine and white wine vinegar, red wine perhaps, but that is doable. He provides some very useful tips to get the most flavor from each recipe. These are not exotic dishes, uses the usual cuts of meat, veggies but in smaller quantities, perfect for me!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2010What a wonderful cookbook! "Table for Two" is like having the author Warren Caterson in my own home, sharing his great collection of wonderful variety of recipes, with just the right portions for two. I was impressed with wide assortment of recipes for fish (tuna steak is great!) along with beef, shrimp, seafood, chicken, pork, and lamb, with a section for vegetarian meals. For those singles or couples that love to try new dishes, "Table for Two" is perfect!
One feature that I loved about this cookbook is that the author has also included "Table for Two Tips" that go with the recipes. These "Tips" are personal notes and suggestions from Warren on an assortment of cooking topics such as "how to purchase chicken leg quarters" to "thawing fish" to "cooking indoors: seared and roasted steak". Even the beginner cook will find these recipes easy, because Warren included other helpful tips such as "basic cooking terms".
Now that I've tried a few of these recipes, (Steak Diane is my personal favorite so far) I'm going to order 3 more cookbooks for wedding gifts and a few more for my college students!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2010Table for Two aims at a very broad audience - everyone from the college kid and newly-wed just learning that cooking and eating at home is so much better (and cheaper) than eating out all the time to the empty-nester and the widowed. Hence, the receipes are fairly simple, only a couple go over one page. The type is large, which is handy in the kitchen.
The introduction includes definitions of cooking terms, measurements, techniques, and ingredients.
The chapters are: Soup, Salads, Seafood, Poultry, Beef, Pork, Lamb, Vegetarian, Sides, Desserts, Breakfasts. The author does have the good sense to suggest buying cakes and cookies as trying to make these for two is difficult. The salad chapter is a tiny 7 receipes.
Of the receipes I have cooked so far, the sauces for the chicken are wonderful and the salmon receipes are good. However, watch the timing. I've had to adjust the times downward after sauteing chicken breasts for the specified time and they were very dry. The author lives in Florida so citrus is used laviously in his receipes.
I look forward to the cooler weather to try out the soup receipes.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2012I went to a demonstration that the author was at in St. Augustine Fl. last year.I learned so much in the demonstration that I and my frieds purchased the book. I have tried other cookbooks for couples but nothing compares to this one! It is great! I have tried many recipes and have been pleased with the results and the portions too. The recipes are great. I have enjoyed this book so much that I have given it as gifts to friends , newly marrieds, and retirees and they have all loved it! I look forward to seeing the authors next additions!
