UPDATE: The $50 bonus has been reduced to a $25 bonus with the new code below.
Perfect timing! Just after I wrote the ShareBuilder Review yesterday, I saw an offer for Free Money to open a new account.
ShareBuilder is offering a $25 $50 sign up bonus for first time account holders!
How to Get Your Sign up Bonus
- Open a new ShareBuilder account using the Promo code: 25WCFA
- Purchase one security.
- The $25
$50credit will be added to your account about 4 weeks after your first trade.

Here are some additional terms and conditions from ShareBuilder for the bonus offer:
You must open a new account with ShareBuilder and deposit at least $25 to be eligible for this promotion. ShareBuilder will deposit a $25 bonus approximately 4-6 weeks after your first $25 deposit. The $25 bonus offer is available for Individual, Joint and Custodial accounts only. Offer not valid for IRAs or ESAs. The $25 bonus from ShareBuilder is not available for withdrawal for 90 days after it is awarded to your account. This offer is not valid with any other offers and is non-transferrable. Limit one ShareBuilder account bonus per unique customer or custodial beneficiary. ShareBuilder reserves the right to terminate this offer at any time and to refuse or recover any promotion award if ShareBuilder determines that it was obtained under wrongful or fraudulent circumstances, that inaccurate or incomplete information was provided in opening the account, or that any terms or ShareBuilder’s Account Agreement has been violated.

I clicked on your E*Trade link below the story and noticed the promotion expired 12/31/07. A similar promotion is going on again currently, through February 25, and you do not need to have an AMEX this time. They had the same promotion in December 2008. I have taken advantage of both now, so apparently as long as it is new money it does not matter if you have taken advantage of the promotion before.

Looks like the $50 bonus is reduced by trading fees. If we’re looking to get the full bonus, could we just open with a small deposit and purchase a mutual fund for free?

I tried, but the code “50WS28″ says it is expired. Thoughts? Thanks. Mike

@ Andy: Good to know Etrade is doing it again! Thanks for the tip.
@ Chris: The terms say purchase one “security.” It doesn’t specify a stock or mutual fund, so I would assume they would both work. You might want to give ShareBuilder a call to verify; they were very helpful when I called.
@ Mike: Give the CASH50 code a try. That one seems to be working. I also updated the post to show the old one is expired. Thanks for letting me know!
