I remember another blogger elaborating on a subject along these lines. (I deserve a newspaper flogging for forgetting though!)

I always found it a lot easier to start off independence by moving out with room-mates before completely moving out into one's own flat independently. These factors are very wise to take into consideration.

A lot of folks my age end up boomeranging because of their inability to budget things like these, with expenses going way over their head.

But a lot of those basic kitchen supplies aren't something to be too too conscious about, given the kind of deals you can find with them. The biggest concern I think is making sure all that rent-work is in order.

Hello Donna!

Thanks for your comments and information. It's tough when you first move out and want to bake a cake--you literally have to buy everything to do so--spatula, bowl, all ingredients, pan, etc. But there are definitely ways to save money in doing so.

This is a really useful post.
Walgreens frequently puts basics like salt, baking soda and spices on sale two for $1, and things like dish soap, sponges, scouring powder and rubber gloves on coupon special for less than a dollar.
Thrift shops might have some of what you need (cookware, dishes).
The yard sale season is starting up, so shop with that in mind. And don't neglect the "free" box at yard sales -- I've seen or obtained Tupperware, a frying pan and saucepan, potholders, cutlery, wooden spoons...
Consider getting a slow cooker. You can find tons of recipes online and you can do big-batch cooking this way, freezing some meals for later on.
If people ask what you want for graduation, I'd say that the household supplies and grocery store gift card mentioned above are both great ideas. Relatives might go in together, each one buying just an item or two.

For any parents reading, I truly appreciated the care package my mom made me the Christmas before I graduated from college. She had gotten together a mop, broom, bucket, white wash cloths/rags, cleaning supplies, and a grocery store gift card to make my move to a new apartment easier. It was awesome!
