we have our HSAs through HSA Resources (www.hsaresources.com) which uses Falcon National Bank (Foley MN) and OptionsExpress. there is a $25/year fee and you can buy stocks and etfs at $14.95/trade. you can set everything up online/by mail. you have to keep $1,000 (per account) in the bank and the rest can be used to invest in stocks. we are letting the balances ride, rather than taking out our annual medical expenses, in case of that unexpected "big one," which we hope won't happen.

On your point about not signing up for a HDHP if you plan to become pregnant during the insurance term - I was recently looking into this because its open-enrollment time and we are considering trying to get pregnant late in 2010. Since we probably would have very few expenses associated with pregnancy in 2010, we thought it would be a good idea to stick with the HDHP this year but then switch when open enrollment comes around in 2010. My question was if pregnancy could be deemed a "pre-existing condition" that would make us unable to switch plans next year. The insurance company assured me it did not count as a pre-existing condition. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

This is great. Getting HSAs to cover the deductible you do end up paying also implies another 30% savings in terms of tax benefits
