Free Money from the Government

1. Making Work Pay Tax Credit Eligibility. There was a lot of hype last year about this tax credit, but did you know it covers 2010 too? Don’t forget you’re getting lower withholding this year; it’s not yet included in the tax brackets for 2011.
2. Social Security Donut hole. The $250 donut hole checks are in the mail this summer. Good news for seniors on a fixed income.
3. 0% Capital Gains Tax. If the Bush tax cuts expire at the end of this year, the 0% capital gains tax will be gone. I’m planning to execute quite a few strategic sell-offs throughout the year to seize this opportunity. It’s one of many tactics in How to Take Charge of the Bush Tax Cuts.
4. Free Money for Kids Untaxed. Kids get a unique opportunity to earn money tax free. Encourage them to take advantage of it, or do some creative family planning to shift some of your income to your kids.
5. Governement Unclaimed Money. Be sure to check the unclaimed money databases to see if you have missing money. I did.
6. Cash Rewards Credit Cards. Did you know that credit card cash rewards are not taxable? The IRS generally considers the cash back as rebates on your purchases and allows you to earn them tax free.
7. Student Loan Forgiveness. A new program for college kids, future student loan forgiveness could amount to a nice chunk of free money.
8. Mutual Fund Settlements. The money won’t come from the government, but since it was a federal court decision, it’s making the list!
9. Flexible Spending Account Changes for 2011. With the FSA changes next year, your account will be more limited. However, there is still an opportunity to stock up on over the counter medicines tax free in 2010.
10. Tax Credit for Existing Homeowners. For those who qualified for the $6500 tax credit or the $8000 first time home buyer tax credit, it’s expanded until Sept. 30.
11. 2010 Roth Conversion. We can’t forget to include the Roth conversion this year. While you won’t see the free money this year, you’ll definitely reap the rewards for years to come when you start your tax free withdrawals!

I’ve lost track how many accounts we have with the Ohio 529 College Advantage program (last time I checked it was 16!)

I always add additional accounts during sign up bonus time, but in reality I actually have a lot of our kids college money in the Ohio 529, since their program is the best.

I even forgo my home state plan with a tax deduction since I like the Ohio plan so much! And we all know, it’s a pretty big deal for me to give up a tax deduction! Here’s why:

Schwab 2% Card Ending

Rumor has it that the Schwab Credit Card which gives 2% cash back will stop accepting new applicants at the end of March.

This is no doubt one of my favorite cash back credit cards right now for everyday spending, so if you’ve been thinking about getting one… do so in the next few days!

Tax Software Prices Going Up

I got an email that prices on all of the H&R Block At Home tax software products will increase on March 27. Today is the last day to take advantage of their “early-season pricing.”

I’m not sure what TurboTax is planning for their pricing, but since the tax deadline is just around the corner, you might as well get them done!

Lending Club Prime Upgrade in March

Check your email for a free invitation for a Lending Club Prime upgrade; mine came on March 23. It appears there is only a specific account link in the email, I don’t see a general link.

Normally, their PRIME accounts have a 0.8% fee. The offer states that if you upgrade by the end of March, any money you have in your account now as well as money you add through the end of the month won’t be subject to the fee. The minimum for PRIME accounts is $5,000.

I don’t know much about PRIME, but clicked on the link to make sure I can review it before the offer expires. Once you click on it, you get a message that they’ll review your account and let you know more. You can then accept the terms if you like them.

Here’s the summary about PRIME that they gave: “With PRIME, you simply select the average target interest rate you want and investment preferences and your dedicated Investor Services representative will help ensure the timely execution of your orders.” Hmmm… sounds interesting.

OptionsHouse Offer Extended

Finally some good news… one program is extending a previously expired offer. The 100 Free Trades from OptionsHouse is extended until April 30, 2010.

This is good news for me since I need a new broker to make an update to our asset allocation… stay tuned for more on that next week!
